I just recieved two books in the mail yesterday. "The Stand" by Stephen King and "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams. I read The Stand many years ago but recently decided to read it again. So I purchased a copy of the Uncut version on e-bay for about $6. (It's even hardcover, I enjoy hardcover so much more than paperback!) I picked up Last Chance to See (also used, it's out of print) on the recomendation of Liar a while ago and am looking forward to reading it.

I can't wait to get a nice quite night when I can go out on the porch and read for a few hours in peace and quiet. Since the birth of my second daughter I find I have very little time to relax and read anymore so the time is that much more precious when I get it.

Anyway, since it appears to me that many of the regulars in the AH read a great deal, I have two questions:

1. Where do you do most of your reading?

2. Whare is your favorite place to read?

I have "my" corner on the loveseat, with a nice lamp on the table next to it. I have to complete my set-up: cigs, ashtray, drink (coffee or coke usually), and munchies. I'll sit there so long reading at night after everyone's gone to bed that my legs will fall asleep (I gotta curl them up underneath me).

!. the bathroom, it's the only private place.

2. A comfy chair or outside on the porch when it's nice. I used to read when I had to wait to pick up the kids, or when I had to use the Laundrymat for a while.

To answer my own question.

1. I probablly do most of my reading in the kitchen. There is a center island with stools and I find myself camped out there fairly often.

2. Almost anyplace outside. I love to read at the beach (just gotta remember sunblock!) or even on my porch at home (but the mosquitoes will carry you away at certain times of the year)

In my recliner, usually with the stereo playing at low volume in the background.

Or when I am out fishing at the lake, I will take along a book or two to read while drowning some worms...

Although at times, catching a fish can be almost an irritation, especially when you've just gotten to a good part of the book when that catfish decides to finally take the bait.

That's my favoured place too, but really, almost anywhere, except outdoors - I can't take the glare off the paper.

I'm just waiting for 'Chanur's Legacy', by C J Cherryh, and 'The Forever War', by Joe Haldeman, to be delivered. Long time since I read 'The Stand'. Always thought it was one of King's best. His 'On Writing' lives on my bookshelf.

I read mostly in bed (have arrangement of pillows perfected). I found my ideal 'reading chair' but it costs as much as a trip to Venice so I'll stick to my bed. Lots of reading done waiting for buses too.

I've got this nasty habit of reading at the table; be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, and I often sit for a whole hour with my coffee and an interesting book, not stopping until my hand suddenly realizes that there's nothing more to eat.

Other than that, I usually read while waiting for the bus or travelling with the bus.

My favourite place to read... is in my bed, curled up with lots of pillows, and the cat on my tummy. I read until I fall asleep and dorp the book on my nose, that wakes me up so I can turn the lights off.

I normally read in bed, must be dark, just a little light, preferably candles.

I don't really have a favourite place to read, but there has to be a variety to the places.

I like bed, lying in the sun on the lawn, on the beach, while taking a bath

By the way, 'The Stand' is a very fine book. I read the uncut version a few years ago and decided recently to read it again. Really great.

I usually read in the living room... either on the couch or in the recliner.

My favorite place would be somewhere with no kids, lol (like that's going to happen anytime in the near future!)

1. On the bus to and from school or, during summer, on the beach.

2. Just about anywhere, if I'm enjoying the book. :)

by the pool

on the beach

in bed

These days most of my reading is done either waiting for or on public transit. (this can be either streetcar, bus or subway)

My favourite is my back porch. It has a nice comfy chair and a light so I can sit and read for hours.

  1. I do most of my reading in the big leather chair in my spare bedroom/den, wreathed in a bluish cloud of toasted black cavendish smoke.
  2. My favorite local place to read is a toss-up between...
the sidewalk café of Javahut coffee shop, whilst puffing on a Romeo y Julieta 1875 cigar.
the lavishly appointed second floor of the Southfield Public Library, in one of their over-stuffed LAN enabled club chairs.
    [/list=1]

Also, I greatly prefer trade paperbacks to any other book format.

Quite a few commuter readers here. I used to burn thru several books a week when I was taking the train into Boston every day. I really miss the reading time now that I have to drive to work.

But I listen to books on tape alot which is better than nothing. The only problem is that unabridged books on tape are very expensive. Anywhere from 40 to 120 dollars, expensive hobby.

My sister-in-law does the tape-books, I can't listen and drive in Dallas traffic. There is a older sci-fi freebie download site called Baen Free Library, google search brings it up, I read anything. I have The Stand in hardcover too, another on that line I stumbled across that I mean, its not scary, it will scare the hell out of ya, is Dean Koontz's Intensity, be warned, you may not be able to put it down.
I like to read in bed and wake up in a pile of cookie crumbs with a paperback poking me in the nipple, I feel like I did something decadent and have to wash the sheets but thats all.

I read anywhere and everywhere, but my favorite places would be in bed or outside. I'll often go out for a cigarette with a book and end up staying out there for hours without realizing it.

Sounds like a bad idea in the long run. Must strain the eyes.

I prefer to read in bed, or if the weather provides, on my balcony. But with plenty of light in either place.

I usually do most of my reading in 30 minute passes in the train to and from work though.

ps. Hope you like Last Chance, cd. I claim no resposibility. ;)

Oh Liar, you told the truth there. It IS rather a bad idea for the eyes. Then again it just a too-good-mood to miss. :)
And I'm not too often reading books actually. So I think it's alright. But you are absolutely right, I think that has already caused some damage to my eyes.

<------ wears glasses :(

Snoopy, a dog with glasses, think of that !

1. Where do you do most of your reading?
Anywhere and everywhere. People are sick of my turning up with a book in the weirdest of places. I even go visiting extended family with a book in my hand if I have something interesting. Dining table, bathroom, bed... just about anywhere.

2. Whare is your favorite place to read?

My room. Bed. Those pillows stacked up and inside my blanket.

I do most of my reading either in bed wrapped up in my duvet or on the couch with a drink beside me and my duvet over me.

Heavenly!
