An 'a little of this and a little of that' kind of thing happening on a Old Town stage tonight and three more nights next week. I participate with a poem/rant/monolouge and my band plays four songs.

A first for both. We've never played a serious live gig, and I've never read poetry live. The stage is not an alien place for me though, I've been a (poorly) paid actor on and off for the last ten years, but I've never taken my poetry to stage before. Will be interresting to see if I can remember the damn thing.

Wish me luck, or something.

good luck, man. :)

you won't need it, though -- your writing is musical, made to be spoken.

Wow, thanks for the cheers of confidence. :)

All went well. Except for the minor detail of losing my trail 3/4 into the fifteen minute piece, ad-libbing like mad for a minute until I remembered what I was supposed to say, and moved on.

Can't say I really enjoyed the experience though. Elaborate elocution is for either stellar performers or for paper. Now I just felt that my intonation, my lips and tongue, came in the way for the proper prosody, the preferred tempo to savor the text, at least how I'd read (not speak) it. So the poem that came out of my mouth was not the poem I wrote, but another one. Slower, more, uh, pretentious.

But hey, I got clapping. Nobody threw anything at me, so I don't think I sucked that bad.

Congrats for even attempting the experience. Reading poems is hard. Even, I think, if they are written to be read. Better for you than me, as you indicate you have acting experience, but still tough.

When I write, I can hear it in my head, but my voice is nothing like the voice I hear if I read it myself.

You guys that do performance have my admiration.

ME TOO!!

isnt that weird? I hate the way I sound on recordings especially, thats why I never submitted an audio poem, I sound like a hick

;)

did you practice it? A lot? It helps me.

but I write like I talk, so, it may be apples and oranges.
