Okay, I'm new and I don't know the ropes too well. So please humor me if I'm asking a stupid question.

What is an 'average' reader-to-voter conversion rate?

My story 'An Apartment in Paris' (shameless plug alert)http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=29707

has so far been viewed 5700 times (is that good after 2 days?) but has only gathered 44 votes. It seems a pretty low ratio to me but I have no way of judging. And does that REALLY mean that only about one person in 130 has the good manners to vote?

Hi English-Passion

From what I've read on here and from my limited personal experience, it seems that, most of the time, less than 1% vote.

From my rather lengthy tenure here, I can safely tell you that it's perfectly normal. People usually read, cum, and go on about their merry way. They don't actually care about the other end of it, you know, you, the person who wrote it. If it's especially good they'll vote, or they'll send feedback.

You'll find most of your voters are writers or people who know writers. The rest just have no idea what kind of work that gets put into it. Generally. There are a lot of conscientious people out there who care. However, most people just think "porn story" like the same guy who writes all those Grade B pornos writes all the smut online. Never occurs to them to care otherwise.

So yeah, you're normal. I noticed that GH Lawrence's Built For One Think, which has somewhere just under 1,000 votes has been viewed almost a quarter of a million times.

This has been talked about many times. It just seems to be 'one of those things.'
Lots of people read but don't vote. I used to check everyday on votes. Finally I got over that and just look forward to the feedback.
:D

Taking a quick look at the few stories I've submitted, I'd say only about 1% of those who read a story bother to vote. I will say however that today, I watched a story of mine that had 173 votes go from 4.75 to 4.72 within 8 votes and 415 "reads" which means someone was pretty agressive with the "1" vote. Such is life.

Keep writing and keep smiling. Afterall, we do this for ourselves don't we? Take care and be well.

Bear in mind when you're checking that you votes update real time, that is every time someone votes your score moves, and views only update once in a 24 hour period, I'm assuming at midnight Pacific standard time where the server is.

I've posted two stories. The first, "Video", got votes from about 1% of the readers. In the second, "Bolero", I made a strong appeal for votes and feedback, and 2% of those who opened the file voted. Feedback had been running about one tenth of the votes in both cases.

Of the places I've posted stories, this site has offered the most feedback.

You're doing fine

Yeah, you're doin' pretty well, EP. I have one story where less than one quarter of one percent of the viewers have voted. And to answer your other question, 5700 views in two days is quite good. You deserve it, too- it is a good story.

voting perspective

EP--

I used to think voting was a viable tool to get greater readership so I hoped for the minimum number of votes and rank to hit the List. My rationale was that hitting the list would increase exposure and thus increase feedback. I have learned that that is true to an extent.

I agree with KM, that the greater amount of feedback will come from other writers who appreciate your writing and readers who have a propensity for following their favorite authors.

I don't have a lot of works on the List for any length of time, and yet my participation on the forums has given me some press and thus the attention of some readers, principally my peers. I get feedback more often than I get votes.

I have conversed with some of the serious(as opposed to hobby) writers on this site and some of the student writers like myself and the feedback has been invaluable. There are readers like RussH and lovetoread whose support has been very encouraging.

Trust that over time you will attract those who are geniuenly interested in your work and your growth as a writer.

Keep writing.

Peace,

daughter
