This writing app evaluates your writing for readability. That is, how easy is it to read, and who can read it without difficulty.

I tested a new story of mine, and its geared for readers with a 6th grade education or more. On a scale of 0-100 my story scores 89, the higher the score the easier it is to read.

Hahaha...my White Trash story got a 99.3 and a first grade level. A sample of a couple of others came in at about 70 to 80ish, though my LW story was at 96.

Keep up the good work and you can join me signing books at thrift stores.

I tried the first part of my story Breathless Stargazing:

Readability Indices
Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease -141.3
Flesch Kincaid Grade Level 87.1
Gunning Fog Score 92.3
SMOG Index 31.3
Coleman Liau Index 12.2
Automated Readability Index 110

Text Statistics
No. of sentences 1
No. of words 218
No. of complex words 30
Percent of complex words 13.76%
Average words per sentence 218.00
Average syllables per word 1.50

Let's see...

Story 1

87.6 / 5 age 10-11 would understand what I have written.

Story 2

96.9 / 4 age 9-10 would understand what I have written. (Problem, if they do I'm in trouble.)

Story 1 is a Space Military Sci-Fi adventure.
Story 2 is the beginning of a psuedo-incest novella.

My story that is pending approval here scored a 91.5 on the readability scale.

The one I'll probably be posting next scored 91.4. The one I'm writing now scored a 92.2.

I like writing directly (my writing heroes are the realists and minimalists), so I like that my stories have a high readability and are pretty consistent on the scale.

This is an interesting tool, OP. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, that must be quite a sentence and a headache to read!

Hmm. Most my stuff seems to score in the low to mid-seventies for readability, with a reading level comparable to grades 8 and 9. Since most mainstream publications, supposedly, are at the eighth grade reading level, I suppose I'm in tune with most of America. :p

A passage from one of my stories, however, was assessed at being at the 11th grade reading level.

Funny thing is, I know that the passage I used for that assessment had been written when I was more than a wee bit drunk.

Word has the same readability test built into it.

Youre so clever...and wrong. Not all versions of WORD, dear. Plus plenny of folks use other word processors.

But we'll give you a nice LIT plastic trophy anyway.

The full story is even harder, and gave the test a headache:

This page has an average grade level of about 213.

Ooh, that's probably a bit too complicated for a web page.
Have you thought about using smaller words and shorter sentences?

I didn't say all versions of Word. You just failed the readability test.

My partner used to work with a guy who was really pleased when one of these tests assessed his writing at 11th-grade level (compared to about 8th-grade for the other staff there). He just didn't get that it wasn't a compliment.

How about mine?

Grade level 213

Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease -698.8
Flesch Kincaid Grade Level 303.5

All that proves is that I can write stuff that people can read even though the readability level is off the scale. :D

Mmmmmm John Scully of Apple says that the best sophistication is simplicity.

If you use MS Word, it can do a reading level check as well. It also uses the Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease and Grade Level. You have to configure it in the Word Options, then when you do a grammar/spelling check, at the end it will tell you your reading level. It looks like it works on all versions since 2002.

The site does give a lot more information. Interestingly the scores were slightly different. Not much, but about a point and a half.

My Contest Story came in at a 92.4. There are some pretty sophisticated fourth graders out there

Whenever I score under an 80, I do a quick check on some of the more complex sentences and vocabulary.
