Read the book, but not watch the movie.

I wish I had with RA Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Paul Verhoeven fucked the whole thing up. The book was so, so, so much better.

Most of the time, I don't read the book or watch the movie.

Ever read a book, but not watch the movie based on the book?

I seldom watch a movie based on a book I have read. Usually the movie is so different from the book it is hard to tell they are related. I have watched a couple of movies and then read the book just to see what the differences were. In every situation, the book is always way better than the film.

The strangest book to movie set-up I have seen were the changes from Ryne Pearson's Simple Simon to "Mercury Rising" in which they lost huge parts of the plot by changing the main character from an African-American man to Bruce Willis, then leaving out the female Asian assassin who was a key character. I had a hard time believing the screen writer had even read the book.

Yes; the English Patient. One of my favorite novels. I have no desire to see the movie.

I don't think the two are really comparable. They are both excellent, with the movie taking a whole different tack with the military ads and Nazi thing.

I can't recall a book I've read and not seen the movie...maybe one will come.

I'm glad I read Veronica Roth's book "Divergent" before I seen the movie. The book was so much better:)

I read The Iliad but I haven't bothered to watch any of those films which are based on it.

PS - it was brilliant! full of gore and fighting and more gore.

That's my point...the only reason they kept the title was for the draw of the now dead author. I realize that the point of the movies was to make money, not follow the book. I was just disappointed by it. It should have had a different title. The sequels were even worse.

None of them were or would be part of the Starship Trooper universe as described by RAH.

I liked the first one, the rest sucked. Now I really want to read the book.

I can name one that I loved the book and wish I'd never seen the movie, Battefield Earth.

Starship Troopers is one of the few where I have done that, and sadly, Divergent. I'll have to read the books.

Startship Troopers supposedly is very different from the books, more funny. I don't know how much I would love the book, but I did enjoy reading Stranger in a Strange Land, so maybe I would.

Legend of Bagger Vance

I saw the movie first and loved it.

Then checked out the book from the library--even better. Then checked out an audio book of same and listened while drive to and from work

I think I've seen bits of Iliad based movies, but none of them were quite my taste.

The big question is, do you prefer the Iliad, or the Odyssey?

Full disclosure: I haven't read the Iliad. Yet.

Starship Troopers is a short story compared to Stranger...I think you will enjoy it as long as you don't compare it to the movie as the two were nothing a like.

Two difference you will notice...

1. There are now women serving in the M.I.

2. There are no male pilots.

Now I didn't read Battlefield Earth, but saw the movie. I disliked the movie. I disliked it very much.

I was excited when the I heard the movie was coming out since I enjoyed the book so much. I had to force myself to finish the movie it was so bad, it was nothing like the book :(

I quite enjoyed Bertrand Russell’s A History of Western Philosophy And Its Connection with Political and Social Circumstances from the Earliest Times to the Present Day – even if, as A C Grayling and others have suggested, it was a bit sketchy in parts. I haven’t seen the movie though. :)

I had a friend pointing out the differences the whole time, they made it sound like I wouldn't like the book, but also absolutely love it themselves.

Still, I'd forgotten the "no male pilots" part, that would really change a bit of the plot. I'll have to see if I can find a copy.

If you know German enough to read a German language novel and watch a German language movie, try Ronja Räubertochter by Astrid Lindgren. The only movie I know that has the same qualities as the book. The language is not too complicated, it's a "whole family" story. A bit old-fashioned.

I don't know if English translations of book and movie exist, but I heard, Astrid Lindgren is often translated, and the original is Swedish anyway. So you could give the translations a chance.

Queen of the Damned - several of my friends were in this, but still wasn't tempted.

Lots of Agatha Christie/Arthur Conan Doyle/Dorothy L. Sayers.

Especially the Dorothy L Sayers.

My Choice is 'The Blue Max'. The film makers produced a different ending.

Same here. I read Rice's books-although by Tale of the Body Thief I wondered why and Memnoch the devil...where's the vomit emoji?

I saw Interview with a vampire which was enough to ensure I didn't see Queen of the Damned.

My friends had a lot of fun at the shoot, playing goth extras at a concert scene. The crowd was supposed to be chanting "Lestat! Lestat!" but instead everybody started yelling "Timmeh!" because that was not long after he showed up in South Park.
