the Kiwi's are used to that stuff.....

Not all of us are that cavalier when it comes to earthquakes. When I moved to the Eastern Bay of Plenty it took me a few years to become accustomed to regular significant quakes.

I had lived about 120 kms away and never felt anything until I moved to the Bay. I recall about 3 strong quakes that really had the windows rattling but no major damage.

In 1985 I moved away and missed what turned out to be a very destructive quake in 1987.

Cavalier? I hardly think so. Perhaps just a bit numb. They are just a part of life, here. A little glass rattling is commonplace.

My first CA Quake was like... 2.5 that rattled my office in Newport Beach about as much as a delivery truck - but the floor was doing that weird wavy thing which creeped me out.

About 500000 Quakes later, I never even notice them anymore unless someone points them out, or they're big enough to knock something off my desk.

Not Cavalier, you just get used to the little ones when they happen every other day.

Maybe this earthquake stuff is something I should think about while sitting on the toilet.

How does ML relate to Richter Scale?

"ML - Local Magnitude - The original magnitude relationship defined by Richter and Gutenberg for local earthquakes in 1935. It is based on the maximum amplitude of a seismogram recorded on a Wood-Anderson torsion seismograph. Although these instruments are no longer widely used, ML values are calculated using modern instruments with appropriate adjustments."
