Rankings?

I was wondering if there might be a way to weight how much sway a person has when they rate a story, I was thinking that people how have numerous approved threads on other peoples stories, would probably know what they are talking about more than say Jonny who joined 5 mins ago. I have seen this kind of thing work at newgrounds (granted they work on a principle of killing stuff people don't like so it's not quite the same thing.)

There isn't any way of doing it. A rating from someone with a 1000 threads has the same meaning as someone with 1 thread.

Since the whole ratings system is broken anyway I don't see how it much matters. I like the feedback I get more than the ranking itself.

I'm with jakelyon on this one. The ratings have pretty much lost their relevance and is more of a feedback tool for me.

I have to agree, that is better than the ratings

It is funny how nice it is to read feedback from a reader.

I love to hear they like an outfit, action, etc

What did you mean the ratings were broken? Can they be fixed? I every so often search stories by rank trying to find a new story to contribute too.

I love getting feedback too, but hardly anyone leaves any. Out of 314 threads that have been read thousands of times, I have received 25 feedback comments.

So, if you feel inspired to leave a rating, leave feedback too. You will brighten the heart of any author in doing so.

Certainly does. Feedback usually encourages me to write more. I also leave feedback when a particular story leaves me inspired or excited. As for picking random stories, maybe looking through the most viewed stories would be a better testing point if you reason that the most viewed would be the most popular.

Maybe a topic for the FAQ...?

This is my personal basis of grading...
1 and 2 are negative, 3 and 4 are positive, and 5... extraordinary

FIVE STARS: this thread was inspirational
Please write more!
If this were the first thread I ever saw at CHYOO, I would want to search through the rest of them to find ones like this.

FOUR STARS: this thread was excellent
I want to see where this goes! Well written.
If this were the first thread I ever saw at CHYOO, I would want to read the entire story and everything the author has written.

THREE STARS: this thread was good
Continues the story. Acceptably written.
If this were the first thread I ever saw at CHYOO, I would want to read other threads.

TWO STARS: this thread was disappointing
One of: Poorly written. Wrong POV. Not long enough. Not descriptive enough. Tedious idea. Off topic.
If this were the first thread I ever saw at CHYOO, I would look at other threads, but likely avoid this story and/or author.

ONE STAR: this thread was shameful
A number of things wrong. I wish it were never posted!
If this were the first thread I ever saw at CHYOO, I would leave and never come back.

This is an excellent summation of how the ratings system should work! Why don't you post it on the Chyoo FAQ. I think this is the best, and clearest explanation of how to rate that I have seen.

Good thread to bump, Peregrinator. Thanks. (And late happy birthday, I see from your profile).

I've gotten some feedback, and it has inspired me to write more chapters.
Please, readers, leave us authors feedback!

Speaking of rankings....

A while back I rejected some threads because......well they were utter shit actually, either one line wonders or so totally off topic you'd wonder how the fuck the writer actually figured his/her contribution was going to fit in with all the preceding threads.

Anyway, I've only just noticed someone’s taken the time to vote down every single story I'm an editor of down to a low as they could, there must literally be a few hours of effort involved in doing that! Between page reloads etc.

But if you're reading this mysterious net-gangsta...I laughed! the thought of someone fuming over their net over something so trivial while I sip my coffee and watch a DVD or go for a walk...HA! And it doesn't even have any bearing! Does anyone go by the ratings? HA! What a waste!

You've obviously got a life, now go do something with it, its the only one you've got. :nana:

I don't go by rankings, though I love to get ranked, and even more, I love to get feedback. I can usually tell by looking at a thread for 1-2 seconds, whether it will be good or not. (1) Length -- is it longer than a paragraph or two, and (2) Punctuation and grammar -- is the first sentence grammatical and punctuated properly, at least reasonably so. 80% of threads that pass these tests will at least be passably good.

98% of threads that don't pass these tests are shit.

There are some who will go unnamed that are in desperate need of "Spell Check". Dear god, why, why can't they get a clue!

Well in the first few months all those millina ago I was using it to judge gauge my success as a writer so yeah... Now I am just a starving feed back whore. You got to wonder what could set someone off like that I mean does he have 3 inch penis on a six foot body? Did his wife leave him and join and now is boss is his wife's new girl friend? Did daddy not give her enough hugs? Heck I think they broke the meter on Geeks are freaks because for the longest time it was my only story and I had an editor's rating of 4.4 and the story had a rating of 0.0 LOL
