I'm reading RAMBO for the 5th time.

Its a good book David Morrell fucked up because he knows squat about the military character. John Rambo acts like a 17 year old bad ass as does Wilfred Teasle, the sheriff.

The Navy Cross and Congressional Medal of Honor aren't won by adolescent bad asses unglued by long hair and know it all old bastards.

I knew a guy who won the Navy Cross for his deeds at Khe Sanh, Vietnam. He was crew on one of our airplanes, and personally removed several wounded Marines from the burning airplane. The Marines awarded him the Navy Cross for the lives he saved. Undisciplined hot heads don't do what the guy did. John Rambo is a nut job.

The infantry company I was in, in Germany, had an E-7 PSG who had been a navy UDT in WW2. He had a Navy Cross. We got him to admit that he was one of the guys who put up the "welcome US Marines ..." signs on the beaches they cleared prior to a landing.

When asked what he did to get the Navy Cross, all he would say is that he "shook hands with an enemy major and handed him a satchel charge." I know there was more to it than that.

As I understand it, the Navy Cross is based on risk to you when you act to save others. Pulling medivacs from a burning plane would qualify you. We had another guy get the Congressional Medal of Honor after he landed his plane at an army camp to rescue some soldiers from certain capture. The plane took bullets as it left the camp. We were the 315th Air Commando Wing. We began life at Normandy as the 315th Troop Carrier Wing.
