R.I.P. Roberta Flack

I knew she was ill. Back in 2022 I submitted a story based on her hit The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. At that time she had already been diagnosed with ALS, a horrible disease if there ever was one. Everyone should take a listen to some of her works. A beautiful voice has been silenced.

A great singer and performer.
Always admired her talent.
Loved her take on ,music.
The woman had soul, and lots of it.
RIP

Oh, how I wish I'd never met you
I guess it must have been my fate
To fall in love with someone else's love
All I can do is wait.

That always gets to me.

I remember I was hosting a college jazz-oriented radio show, this was late ’68-early ‘69 or so, and a 45 rpm demo came in through the mail of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack. Had never heard of her, no one had at that time, but the song was great and I played it on my show that night. The song became quite a hit after the album came out and was ubiquitous on the radio for a while, and whenever I heard it, if I was with someone, I’d relate my story, always adding, perhaps truthfully, maybe not, that I was the one who introduced that song to the Delaware Valley. It was, and is, a great love song.
