Also passing away today was former Senator Eugene McCarthy, a name that probably means little to people under 50, but his contributions to America were not insignificant. His entry into the 1968 Democratic Presidential primaries, when no other candidate dared challenge the incumbent, and the surprising successes he achieved in the early going, pretty much forced President Lyndon Johnson to drop out of the race.

Robert Kennedy jumped in to the race when he saw the way the tide was turning and the rest, as they say, is history. The eventual Democratic nominee, Hubert Humphrey, was described by Hunter Thompson far more eloquently and accurately than I ever could.

I don't usually get misty eyed about politicians, but Clean Gene was another breed of another era, when the word politician didn't always translate into whore. I suppose that may say more about my idealistic youth than it does about the man, but that's life. :rose:

It says a great deal about the man as well. Even on the relatively few occasions when I disagreed with him, I had to admire his honesty and his conviction.

How different the world might be today if we'd had either Gene McCarthy or Bobby Kennedy in the White House instead of Richard Scumsucking Nixon.
