I have recently finished writing a story in which one song plays an integral part in the mood of the character. Is there a way I can use lines from that song without infringing on copywrite?

I believe you just need to include a copyright acknowledgment in your endnote.

otherwise

if you include more than three lines of the song they will reject the story...

otherwise??

When you said otherwise (the title), did you mean if you do not include copyright acknowledgment? Or that I can't include more than three lines?

I'm not sure they'll even let it in with copywrite acknowledgement.
I know for certain that if you quote more that three lines, it'll get rejected (been there twice).
I think you'd need a "Used by Permission" type thing.
If the story isn't a parody which would land it in the 'Celebrities" section, then you're going to have a hard time getting it past the editors and on the site.

That's odd. I've used lyrics several times and never had a problem.

happened twice to me.

Quoted a verse from "Kiss Me Goodbye" for a story of the same title and they shot it down.

In Ditzy Donna I used the whole first verse and refrain of the lyrics to M*A*S*H and it came roaring back.

I guess they like you....

I'm jealous now.

By the way, just read your 'Physical Therapy'

Very nicely done.

Hoping for the best

Well I'm just going to submit it as is and hope for the best. I don't want to alter it at this stage as it might require an entire rewrite.

P.S. Graham. Buzz Me Wow! Need to try that one on my wife

Good luck!

Maybe they'll like you more than me too....

In my recent story, Rare and Delicate, I had some lyrics from one song as I'd done in other stories, but this particular story got rejected. The reason for the rejection was that another song was also included, but nearly completely.

When I resubmitted it, I had the end notes giving as good a copyright info as I could find, and it was accepted. You should be able to find the copyright from the song itself on the internet, if you don't know it.

If you need it, here's a couple of sites I used:

LyricsFreak.com
SeekLyrics.com
OldieLyrics.com

Good luck to you.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind next time...

What Rob said. Well, actually, it was only once, but it was certainly more than two or three lines, and didn't have a bit of trouble going through.

I guess it was the editor at the time. They use different ones and most of the time there is only one. I must have just had a bad bit of luck.

I think the closest I've come to posting lyrics was the phrase "The waiting is the hardest part, as Tom Petty once informed us."

It'd be good if we could clear up the legalities of this it would be helpful, as that particualr line is in the story I'm editing for "Coming Together."

Anyone seen Lauren Hynde?
