In MagicHandsLee's "goodbye" thread I included a quote which I've also very recently added to my sig. line.

In the thread I failed to attribute it although it is attributed to the character that said it in the sig.

I've been asked if it was mine. The answer?: I wish.

The quote is: "I've been given something for a while, and the price of it is that I have to give it back."

It's taken (stolen) from The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett and is in reference to magical power that cannot be borne for long and must be relinquished. But it resonated with me and I managed to pass it on to two separate people the day after I read it.

It seems to resonate with a few other people too. In my own smug and self-satisfied way I added a few of my thoughts to the quote in order to give it relevance and to appear profound and thoughtful. (that never lasts long)

So. How often do you find yourself in this position?;

Oscar Wilde: I wish I'd said that.

Whistler: You will Oscar, you will.
M.Python

Examples would be nice, with appropriate background.

In which position?

Finding myself quoting an author when I'm in a situation where his or her words are relevant?

Or

Finding myself with a gift where the price of that gift is that I have to give it back?

Whistler once said something snotty like that to me too. Mamma's boy.

The first.

One day I'll post a thread where the first reply isn't a request for clarification

Sorry about that. Ya had me confused.

To answer your question - Yes, I find myself quoting others all of the time. Sometimes they're song lyrics, sometimes they're quotes from books. Often, they're quotes from movies.

Whether it's due to life imitating art, or art imitating life, I reckon that for pretty much any situation I find myself in, I can dig up at least a couple of quotes that are relevant and/or reflect the situation.

Glad it wasn't just me, then :)

I suck at quoting. I mean, I have al those profound one-liners floating around in my head, but as I never seems to be able to match them with theor author, I tend to refrain from using them.

I mean...

"This is an utterly cool quote." -Some Dude, Can't Remember Who.

...looks kind of lame.

When I'm quoting movies, I usually take a quick visit to imdb.com to verify my quote and make sure I've got it right. In the thread where I quoted the movie 'A Few Good Men' recently, I actually fired up the movie to get the full quote, because imdb didn't have it.

Problem is, I wouldn't know which movie it was from either, or even who the actor sayign it was most of the time.

Using Google and just doing a search on the quote or perts of it sometimes works though. Try doing that ten years ago. Yay for the internet.

Dear Gauchie,
Oh, boy! Just what we need, longer sig lines. I fondly remember the days of yore before I learned that you can turn them off.
MG
Ps. Hot damn
Pps. I think I may be experiencing a renaissance of my pre-illness misanthropic streak.

So very thrilled to see you and your post scripts again, Maths. You've been well and deservedly missed. :rose:

Ps. Hot damn... gotta love that.

You rock, MG

Is it a Leboyer renaissance? A Lamaze renaissance? Are you holding pillows in small groups and breathing fast with your tongue in the way?

;)

People are a little wacked. You have to love them in spite of it, if you're ever going to.

The obvious reason why it resonates with so many is because that is the human condition.

Life!

:(

As for quoting authors, we all do it, often unknowingly, and usually when we think we are being most profound!

And maybe a return to the Dubious Dictionary?

:)

Dear Sherea,
Maybe. Possible. Might be.
Waveringly,

Ps. I got a new computer. Didn't save everything from the old one. Unfortunately, I think the DD survived.
Pps. I made sure that all the DurtGurl things were saved. It sure would be a shame to lose something like "Me and Mom."

Dear Maths,

I'm glad you saved those valuable mss. However, I would not be sorry to know Durt's AVs were lost.

truthfully, Perdita

oops

Sorry, Gaucho, I forgot this was a serious thread. You and others know I have many Shackbard quotes for all sorts of situations. He's easy to call to mind as he covered just about every human predicament ever. What I like about using his lines is that the person I direct them to always 'gets' them, at the time, and then I have a chance to say more about the old bloke.

My other fave quotees are S. Beckett, O. Wilde and A. Chekhov, but there are only a few each that I use. You know them all I think.
