Listen to me, or it's rubber chicken time!

*glare*

I filled my profile out. But now that the rubber chicken is coming out, I may go delete it to prolong the fun...

And the thanks returned to you Tham.
You have been a very welcome and polite addition to the family here.
I had welcomed you in Abs place, but I figured I would do it officially here.
It is nice to see someone like you come to the AH.

Welcome

Good luck and Thank you.

I realize I am the new guy and all...

But, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted on AH in the last 72 hours. I have seen more coherent thought, intelligent discussion, and mutual admiration and respect in these 3 days, than I have seen combined in the last 3 years.

This is a good place.

Hurrah for us!

I actually ran into someone on a feedback thread who asked me in a PM why everyone was "so damned polite and nice around here," and why there wasn't more blood in the water as on other Internet bulletin sites. I don't think he meant it as a compliment, but I think it was one to all of us.

I might hypothesize Shang, that there are far too many here that are armed both mentally and physically, or both, for two much to get too far out of hand.
I have always appreciated the respect shown here by most of the denizens of the AH,myself. It makes a lot of difference.

Quite possible, I concede. But I hold out a lingering hope that it's some shred of goodwill and good sense - that we realize that authors need support and help and good advice, and that taking and giving those things requires an environment that fosters at least some trust and comradery.

I know, I know. I'm a hopeless dreamer. But I like my dream. Glad you're all in it.

I concur completely Shang. To me that is part of the mentally armed. Without goodwill and good/common sense, there would be little here to attract like minded individuals. Those interested in authoring are the crux and nucleus of the whole thing.
I like your dream. I see nothing hopeless about it.

I wouldn't've said it was that calculated. Quite simply, I put it down to us all being relatively nice people. Of the newbies, the nice ones feel very much at home and stay, increasing the niceness pool, and the nasty ones either get ignored wholesale, humiliated by their intellectual superiors in debate or sickened by the saccharine sweetness.

The question that has to be asked is - who were the original nice guys that started off this cycle? Before even my time.

I will be the first to say that I love a good flame war. My experience has been that most writers do. It's good exercise. :D

I imagine that the few who unwittingly came here looking to battle, were met with razor sharp wit and scathing sarcasm.

Like I said, you all are my kind of people. :D

Shang, that's a first. :D

I've never seen myself described as fluffly, sweet, cuddly OR adorable. I think that's sigworthy...I'm keeping it. ;)

There was a lad in my art class at secondary school. We NEVER said a nice word to each other. Nope, insults all the way. We were nasty, sarcastic and we loved it! I looked forward to trading insults with him. It really excercised my imagination and gave me a good laugh. We both knew it was only a bit of fun, though. You have to be a bit careful with sarcasm online, even with a :D it can be misconstrued!

I tend to find being really nice to insulting people tends to throw them in to disarray.

I used to frequent a chat room(well a few, all gone now *sigh*) and occassionally you'd get someone come in and throw insults left right and centre. I remember one lovely australian battling away for my honour...but as sweet (and kind of a turn on) as it was, I saw it as being quite useless.

I think ignorance is the way to go. The kind of person who wants to stir, wants a reaction. Don't give the reaction and the twerp gets bored -voilla! That's my theory anyway.

Oh, and look. Iam proving my comment on another thread somewhere, that I could waffle for England!

Wrong thread. ;)

Glad you like the place, we are all very fond of it, and the people who come (probably a bad choice of word, but what the hell.) here to play, rest, have fun, serious conversation.

It IS a special place, with a great sense of community, camaraderie and an unbeatable support network for those times in each of our lives when things don't go quite right.

And on those rare occasions, it enables one to meet the love of one's life.

Incredible.
