I am amazed that a foreigner could ever learn to speak the Han (Mandarin Chinese) language, what with it being a tonal language and all. "Ma" for instance, has five disparate meanings depending on tone. Two possible meanings for "Ma" are "mother" and "horse." I'm sure you can see the potential for an embarrassing faux pas.
Learning to speak simple always polite Japanese is comparitively simple.
