I'm straight, but I have some questions for those of you who are gay or bi. The first one is just for the sake of my own curiosity; Do you get turned on by looking at yourself in the mirror? It's a pointless question, I know, but I'd still like to know the answer.

I'd agree with ilike2try. Not sure what to say to your friend other than what you've been saying. Does he come from a strong religious background, or was he bullied in school or something along those lines? That could possibly account for the esteem issues. Or perhaps he just doesn't make friends easily and/or is a bit lacking in social skills. As you said, it's perfectly 'natural' to be bi or even gay, in the sense that it's part of the human experience. Even moreso is it natural to experiment during one's teens. You may want to refer him to a local youth GLBT group - there is also probably a website for GLBT youth services in his area.

First, please don't refer to being bisexual or gay as a condition. Desiring to sleep with other men (or women if you're a lady) doesn't make you ill, and that's what it sounds like when you call it a condition.

I would research and recommend GLBT support groups if there are any local to you. Maybe a GLBT friendly therapist to help deal with his self-esteem issues. It's not something he'll be able to deal with, with some simple advice. It took me over 15 years to truely come to terms with my own sexuality and another 10 or so to be able to tell my wife.

If I had a support group, or therapist it might have been a much shorter time. And a much happier life. At least he's started early.

Also don't overlook the possibility that he's looking to you for more than emotional guidance. It sounds as though he's gotten attached to you. I don't know if it's as a father figure or a love interest, so be careful with him.
