Ok I haven't written anything for literotica yet, because i'm too nervous about doing that right now.

However, I have written stories for myself and have noticed some problems.

1. When I get to the action, after a while it tends to start sounding like a shopping list. i.e then I did this, and then I did this, etc.... how do i prevent this?

2. Is is wise or unwise to write when i'm 'excited' ?

I guess those are my main concerns.

Thanks for the help,
~Jesse~

1. Sit down at your computer and focus on the story. Imagine what it would be like without quite as many "then's," and slowly begin to remove the ones that you find uneccessary. Physically remove the unwanted words, and consider whether your story has enough description to maintain the readers' interest throughout the "action." This is known as then buddhism.

Seriously, often adding description to your action scenes will cause the reader not to look at it as a shopping list. Also, get a friend to do a second read for you.

2. It is neither wise nor unwise, grasshopper; it depends entirely on how well you write while you are excited. Re-writing, though, and self-editing, is best done when you can give it your undivided, calm attention

Good luck with your stories! Welcome.

... and whether, of course, you can type well one-handed. :D

Sorry. Someone had to say it...

Seriously, all good advice. The other thing you could p'raps try is not writing in first person. Write in third. Give yourself a name and write it from an omnipotent viewpoint.

Good luck! :)

Some writers produce their best when they are excited. And it works the other way too. Depends on the person.

The "shopping list" thing is pretty normal for a new writer. You problem is you haven't developed your characters and made them real. Do I care if the heroine has long blonde hair down to her ass or the hero has a two-foot dong? Not really.

You are so much better off concentrating on making your characters have personalities and seeming to be real. Then they can act like real people and their actions will follow without the shopping list.

Thanks for all the advice.

I generally don't write in first person, even though the example seemed so-an inaccurate example. I think I will write 'one-handed'-it seems to inspire me...lol.

Again, thanks for the help.

An editor would help a lot. I think the best thing is to get it written and then go back and fix whatever is wrong with it.
