If you get same sex married in NYC:

does other states recognize the union?

can you file jointly on your fed income tax?

can you now claim the spouse on your insurance?

if you move from NYC to another state that refuses to recognize the union do you have grounds for a law suit?

is the ACLU involved in any such litigation pursuing the rights of recognition for such couples?

No, no, yes, no, maybe. ;)

Suggest you google and read about DOMA.

I think Safe Bet missed a few items: Do other states recognize the union? Depends on the state -- some do, most don't. You need to check the laws of the state in question. Can you now claim the spouse on your insurance? Two factors determine this. If the state in question recognizes the marriage, then yes. If the state does not, then it depends on both the employer and the insurance carrier. Worth checking with your HR department, but, usually the answer is no.

Actually, a lawyer friend of mine claims you CAN file a lawsuit to get your out-of-state marriage recognized in your home state, despite DOMA. I forget the details but it might be something to look into if you're litigation-friendly.
