Questions about Illustrations for stories

If an author wants to include photographs mixed into their text to make it an Illustrated Story, what conditions (other than owning the copyright of the images as well as the text) need to be met?

I've seen stories here that had full body images (that could probably be identified), CGI images, and line drawings. Does anyone here have experience with this mixing of media?

If not, are there any suggestions about who to ask?
