Can a story be edited once it's been posted?

I've always been under the impression it can not but I have a story that was posted a couple months ago where I found a mistake after it was published. I apologized in the comments but someone told me I can go back into the story and fix the mistake without disturbing the score or the comments.

Does anyone know if that's true?

That is true. You resubmit the edited story with "EDIT" appended to the title. It's best to put a general explanation of the edit into the notes section.

It takes longer to get an edit posted than it does to post a new story. I've had an edit on an older story pending for more than a week now.

the comments and the score when it's reposted?

Some of the comments might no longer be relevant.

For example, my frequent error, despite numerous checks, is changing the names of the characters during the story. I did this in the last few words of my fourth Brigit story.

If a reader points out the error, I will correct it by an edit unless it is a contest entry. I think, and it is only my personal choice, that if I put a story into a contest it should remain unaltered until the contest has ended. Then I make the edit.

You can delete the no longer relevant comments after the corrections have been made, but I also leave my own comment thanking the readers for telling me about my mistakes.
