Question from the outside looking in

As one that has spent way too much time reading threads around this place, I am struck by the back and forth exchanges from folks that generally do not care for each other in the least. The same posters have to know their opinion will not change the other's mindset even a little bit. I am not referring to the political or occasional thread that folks are just expressing themselves, rather I am talking about the threads that devolve into beyond the usual GB snark into plain ugly. My question is why bother? What motivates you? After you have called someone so and so's alt for the nth time and you have told them to go get bent for the zillionth time, what is the purpose? Do you think that perhaps telling them one last time to go get screwed, you (fill in the blank) alt, is gonna make them realize the fallacy of their own opinion? Maybe I am missing the purpose of the GB. And for what it's worth this is a serious question, I am just interested in the thought process. Like lots of folks I look at the train wrecks too. Just wondering is all.

Great question! As a long time lurker I too follow/peruse many threads and add little to the foray...but the arena has long ago been staked out and places reserved for the same combatants...
its interesting....like slowing down for a car wreck, but no one is changing religion or ideology because of it.

I think it comes down to a lot of them probably ARE an alt, and others- thou the will never admit it- may actually like the person they constantly rag on. Think of it this way, you have great friends in real life who go to dif church than you or are a dif political party. You have much in common, including respect, so you do not deride their twist in belief. Here you can go ahead and call them what you want.

Oh come now. Not only did I post that I was the one behind Jakesass34 but I also apoloized to him - in a thread - after he had his change of heart. Besides there are 8 Litsters that knew all along because they pm'd me and asked who I was. I told anyone that asked.

Funny things is there are some really smart folks on Lit and the GB in particular. So my question was not asked to invoke self reflection and change, just wanted to know what drives some folks is all.

I suspect the hatred comes from the fact that there are several on lit who can NEVER BE WRONG.
I think those same NEVER WRONG people are the same in r/l.
They must be completely insufferable, and have almost no friends. Not to mention the fact that they have no-one left who will sit still and take the superior, lecturing attitude they have.
So they come here, pick a line from a specific poster, and take out their frustration on the boards. Which turns into some form of net-hate.
Sometimes, I feel a twinge of sympathy for the NEVER WRONG.
It must be difficult to go thro life knowing in their hearts they are NEVER WRONG, but being unable to convince anyone else.

WQ you sound like someone that lives and enjoy and doesn't let others ruin her party. I like to think I am gonna be that person someday. (as long as vodka isn't involved) By nature I observe a lot more than I talk. I have learned a lot about people just by keeping quiet. I s'pose the reason I asked the question is that tho I have been with a rough crowd at times, in general most of the people I know are kinda like the do unto others crowd. They don't really go looking for trouble. Won't back down one tiny bit but they don't go looking for it. In just about every thread anywhere, hell even if Mother Theresa had started a thread, there would be some folks that cannot stop themselves from an unprovoked attack. Those are the same folks that I was hoping would give an honest to goodness answer.

Yup, there's plenty of very intelligent peeps on this board, but some who are unable to control their emotions.

My reason for the alt was to crack on Jake and it didn't take long to realize that I had gone from poking to just being mean. I stopped and was glad to see him apologize to lots of folks he'd gotten into it with. Hey folks can get as nasty as they want. None of us are gonna run off and shed tears. I just have a curiousity about some things is all. Ooops didn't quote Indie but this was in reply to that one. Another thing I learned is that keeping track of even ONE alt was hard. How does anyone keep up with bunches of 'em?
