I recently had XP Pro installed on my computer and am having a really annoying problem and was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or knows a solution. I can connect to the internet fine with outlook or Yahoo or Everquest, etc. But, when I click on IE6 or on Windows Explorer I get disconnected almost immediately and have to reboot before it will redial at all. Some specifics on the computer are.... Windows XP Pro OS, creative labs 56k v92 modem,384 megs sdram,40 gig hd, P3 800 mhz processor. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Later.

Couple of things I can think of real quick. 1) Both of the offending programs have a connection setup tab under Tools-Options. You might check the settings see if anything stands out. Does the name of your connection appear in the Dial Up box. Unless you use multiple connections check the box that says dial a connection if one isn't present, that way IE6 will try to use the one currently open.

2) This kinda sounds like a problem I had after @home went under and AT&T took over my connection. Go to Admin Tools(found in the Control Panel), click Services, look for DNS client, right click, select properties and set Startup-type to MANUAL. Reboot and see if it resolves. Hope this helps.

WinXP Pro

I am using WInXP Pro and IE6 but I am not having your problem, plenty of others mind u! I am considering moving over to Win2000, but as user friendly but more stable.

Astro,

the key to WinXP really is the clean install. When you do the upgrade, there is so much CRAP left behind by the other programs and OS that it will drive you bonkers over time.

I started with an upgrade, eventually moved all my data onto cd, reformated and did a clean install, and it works great.

Looks like everyone is going the same way.
I run XP Pro (Corporate Release 2600) for just over two months during which time it degraded in stablity and performance.
I removed it all with a clean format and have gone back to 2000 Pro..far more stable, faster, secure and none of those stinking wizards trying to teach an old dog new tricks.
And now i can use my CD-RW the way i want to, not the way that XP wants me too.

XP BITES>

thanks

Looks like I must agree.. XP Pro is not any better than XP or ME for that matter. Thought XP Pro would be a good one since XP is a hackers dream...lol... Thanks everyone for your replies. Later.
