Question for the "Novels" authors...

Hi there! :) I have a question for the authors who write in the Novels and Novellas section. (Or, of course, the question could be reworded for the readers who love that category!) Typically, do you add a "disclaimer" at the top of your submission to let your readers know *IF* there is any kink in your novel? Or do you just hope it would be obvious within the title and/or summary line?

Therefore, reworded for the readers... Do you prefer a disclaimer in case an author added incest, BDSM, anal sex, or other "fetishes" beyond basic hetero sex?

It is advisable to include some sort of note if the story includes something that might offend the general Literotica reader.

Of course, the 'general Literotica reader' is fairly broadminded but if you included Incest, BDSM, Gay/Lesbian, Loving Wives, Inter-Racial, etc in a single story you would probably annoy almost ALL the readers.

Yes, I think I would- both as a writer and as a reader. I neglected to add a disclaimer to a lesbian story that included a fairly heavy S&M scene and got some flack for it. It was my fault, and I try to be more precise nowadays
And as a reader- basic hetero sex is boring to me for my own preferences- so the writer had better be very good... I'd rather know in advance if I am about to slog through pages of mediocrity without a payoff :D

That is something I hadn't even thought of and 'tis duly noted. Thanks for the heads-up. My two postings are under the novels and novellas category, and they do venture outside of heterosexual interaction (particularly chapter 2). I will put an advisory up when I submit chapter 3.

Hallowed, my darling! :rose:

If I could ever write something that long, I'd definitely put a disclaimer on it so people knew what they were getting into. And as a reader, I'd like that as well. Just to be on the safe side. :)

I try to put a little something in an Author's note and I also will specify in the catch line. I had a couple of fans yell at me when I had a rape scene that was pretty graphic and I hadn't given any warning that it was going to be in the story. Though now, I try to stay out of Nov and novella. They just don't garner the reads and the votes that specific cats do, such as romance. It's just a matter of preference.

Up until a few hours ago I had a link up. I removed it as I am taking some time "off" Lit. I just wanted to ask this question before I go.

I hope everything is okay, hon.

Same thing can apply to Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Non-Human, Erotic Horror, etc. Any category where the specific type of sexual encounter isn't specified, you may want to put a disclaimer in noteing anything beyond Tab A => Slot B

Some readers still won't pay attention, but at least you can say "Hey! I warned you!" if the disclaimer is in there.

Ok, I think I got the right thing in the edit signature box. If I didn't (or if I need to post this on how to), please let me know! I'm still learning.

Come on, People. With a title like, "Harvey Get's Buttfucked," what do you really need to warn the reader about?

You need to warn the reader about exactly how will Harvey get us buttfucked. We tend to want to know that before we're buttfucked. ;)

When I posted the fifth part of my Pretty Baby series, I included a disclaimer at the beginning that warned readers that the chapter included 'some material that may be offensive to some viewers.' Notably, that the only sex in the entire chapter dealt with the rape of the main character.

I think the disclaimer helped with the story, by giving readers a 'heads-up' on what was to happen. Neither voting nor ratings have suffered because of the nature of the story.

I think, in some situations -- rape/non-consent, unexpected homosexual or BDSM sex -- providing a disclaimer to readers helps more than it hinders. Especially if your story has followed more 'conventional' paths up to that point. Having a story dominated by the themes of romance and consentual sex suddenly turn into a 6-way lesbian orgy might turn off some readers. Giving them a warning ahead of time can help prevent angry criticism.
