Question about voting

I had a quick question about voting. A poster submitted a comment that he loved the 2nd chapter of my new story, but left the score at 50%. I emailed to ask if that was an accident or did he really think the score should have been that low. He responded that the score on comments doesn't affect the total score, only the vote (1-5) does, and he goes back after finishing the story to vote on each chapter. Is that accurate? I've never heard that (always wondered about people posting multiple comments and leaving the score at the default 50%).

Thanks,
....S-Des

Yes, that is accurate. I have responded to "public comments" raising some question about a story with my own PC. On these I place the temp right in the middle. It is not a "vote" and does not affect scores.

The percentage that is shown next to a comment does not affect the 1-5 voting that is done on the story. The percentage is simply a visual for other commentors to see. The two have no baring on each other.

The default for comments is 50%. I have unfortunately occasionally forgotten to change the percentage and winced later finding out that I goofed.

Hold the phone...

I'm positive that I've seen a comment only with no vote change my vote total, more than once, in real time. Somebody I talk to on messenger was reading and sent me a message when they commented. I know they only post comments, because we had both assumed that a vote and a comment would be a double vote and one would end up getting swept eventually.

This happened more than once, and I find it hard to believe that another identical score vote came in at the exact same moment as the comment to change my vote total by one.

I've had another author tell me that my vote was the one which pushed them over the 10 as well, and it was with a PC only, also pretty much in real time.

If public comments don't count as votes, then I've only voted on perhaps six of the stories I've ever read, because they didn't have PCs turned on.

My understanding is that the thermometer next to public comments and the actual votes have nothing to do with each other.

I have always heard that too and it brings up something that has puzzled me. From time to time, I will get a PC telling me how great a story is. The thermometer, though, is set at 75%. If it was 50% I would figure that was the default setting and the poster didn't change it. If it was at 100%, I would figure it reflected the vote. But if it is at 75%, does that mean the vote was a four and, if it is, why, if it was "a great story"? If it was not a four, why is the thermometer set there?

I've gotten a lot of that on the new story. It's frustrating. In After The Fact every PC was a 00% or a 100% (based on how they reacted to my 'interesting' resolutions). This one keeps getting 75% because people say they don't understand some piece of dialogue or character's actions. Seriously, I don't write that complicated. I'm confused on this one.

My stories are about as uncomplicated as they can get. I write about people having fun sex. At least, most of my stories are about that.

Okay, now I *know* I'm not crazy.

I have a story, "Arts Ardane:KW", for which I've been hoping to get some really specific feedback on a character that I really like and was considering using again.

This story has been sitting at exactly 10 votes for a couple of weeks now, and I refreshed my totals just before submitting the comment in another window.

So, I left a public comment without voting asking for feedback on Darmok, and then immediately refreshed my submission page. It now has eleven votes and the score went up from 4.80 to 4.82.

The rating submitted with PCs certainly *does* affect your vote totals and score.

I've heard that the thermometer on the public comments only comes into play if a vote has not been registered already -so if the person votes, that's what counts -if they don't, the score on the PC counts. I'm not sure myself if it's true, but it sounds as if it could be :)

That sounds reasonable, but I certainly hope I'm not getting low scores because voters are under the wrong assumption. This one, knowledgeable author told me he intentionally gives 50%, then goes back and votes after he reads the whole story (so he can judge how good the chapters were in context). I don't know, maybe I'm just in whiney mode because of the new story. I always am too worried about this stuff. I should be grateful that my stories get so much traffic.

I'll quit complaining and take the good with the bad. If anyone ever finds out for a fact what the truth is, please add it to the thread.

Thanks,

Soemone should ask Laurel to give us the definitive answer :) That'd be useful.

From FAQ's

At the bottom of some stories, I see the words "You can leave a public comment on this submission!" What does this mean?

This section is called the Public Comment Board. This is a place for you to leave public feedback on submissions, and to read other readers' opinions. Anything you type here will be posted beneath the submission for everyone to see. If you want to leave private feedback for the author, you can either use the Anonymous Feedback link at the end of the submission or the link at the top of the author's profile.

Authors can choose to activate or deactivate the Public Comment Board on their work. Comments are expected to be free of spam and to relate to the story. If you see an inappropriate or off-topic comment, you can use the "Report This Comment" link to bring it to our attention. Remember: these authors are sharing their work with you at no charge. Be respectful.

You must give a rating to the story to leave a comment. If you have voted on the submission previously, then the vote you leave with the comment will not count toward the submission's total.

The answer is in FAQ's - If you PC before you vote it is the PC 'Vote' that counts. You have to either set the thermometer, or leave it at 50% - This explains a lot. I know I've often done the PC before voting and don't always remember to move the thermometer.

You see, if we were all as thorough as this wonderful gentleman, we could have had this cleared up ages ago.

:rose: well found, love. Well found.

Ah crap! Well, that's bad news. I wonder how many posters make the same mistake? Now the next question is, how do you explain that to everyone? You do everyhing in your power to get people to comment, how do you tell them that they're wrong and giving you a lower score than they think?
