Bunny,
The "H" means that 10 or more people have read the story and the accumulated vote score is 4.5 or higher. (Way to Go Girl!)

The "E" next to a story means that Laurel has chosen the story as an "Editor's Choice" because of the writing, content, etc. Very difficult to get :(

Hope this helps.

What do the colored icons beside stories mean?

The red H's denote stories which have received 10 or more votes from readers, and maintain an average vote of 4.5 out of 5 or better.

The yellow E's denote "Editor's Choice" stories. These are pieces that we really like - just our opinion.

The green W's are next to stories that have been chosen by readers as winners in our Monthly, Yearly, or Special contests.

Lit. FAQs.

Warning

If you get an H or an E some people seem to give low votes to your story. Don't know why. Jealousy?

Expect the rating to drop for a while. Eventually the number of votes should average out. Anything that has a large number of votes and is still over 4.5 is good.

congrats on the H rating. When I get more time I'll read the story :). If you're satisfied with the story good. Just don't put to much stock in the ratings. A four part series I've written got an H on each story although I'm not particularly satisfied with them. Then again stories that I've worked hard on and feel are good hardly got above a four.

Only happens because they are jealous of your good looks, Des

I think multipart stories have an advantage. People who liked part one will be looking for part two and barring a significant change in the story line or characters are likely to be happy with the next part. Someone who reads part 4 might love it and go back to read one through three. Anyone who finishes one and liked it will almost certainly at least try part two.

Whenever I post a new story I get at least one or two feedbacks on older works. People at least glance at your previous work when they like a new one. Multipart stories tend to feed themselves. Part one being advertisement for part two etc. they also create a market for themselves by holding fans in suspense about what the next part will bring.

By part three or four, you have a ready made group (those who finished part two and liked it) who are eager to see part three and unless it's a major dropoff will probably throw good votes because they got what they expected, to a greater or lesser degree.

I can not say for certain, but I would hazard a guess that most multi part works in an author's repitiore do better than many of their stand alone works, even if they are not of the same calibre as the stand alone work.
