Question about submitting audio


I am starting to put my stories into audio and have run into a problem.
I tried to submit three of them today, two of them went through fine. The question is on the third one it said "would exceed file storage limit", does that mean that I as a user have a storage limit on that server and would exceed it and need to wait until the other two are accepted and posted? Or, does it mean that the file is too large to go through and exceeds their server limit?

I appreciate any help anyone can give me on this. The rest of my stories are just as long if not longer than the one in question and I want to know if I'm wasting my time recording them if I can't upload them.

Several things spring to mind. LIke you say it could be that 2 stories is the limit (maybe only per day). Maybe you need a better compression for your recordings MPeg or whatever. Maybe even zipped? If it's just for uploading purposes rather than server space.

I'm sure that someone has mentioned before that they send their audio on tape via snail.

If it is a question of only uploading so much at a time then couldn't you find a natural break somewhere to make them in parts?

While you are waiting for a direct answer, might I ask what format you are using? If it's wav, have you considered converting to mp3?

MP3 allows for some serious compression with only minimal loss of audio quality.

Also, what sizes are the files in question?

I think they turned out well but of course others will be my judge and jury. I'm not crazy about my own voice so it's hard for me to say "Yea, they're perfect".

Jebus bebus, how long are those stories in minutes?

If it's just speech, I think you can easily go 64 kbps bitrate or even less without losing too much in quality.

I'm not sure what the limit is on the storage capacity, but I would imagine there would be a limit since resources are finite.

I would suggest a PM to Laurel about this. Perhaps an update of the FAQ would be in order.

Something to consider when you're making audio is that well over half of your potential listeners are on dial-ups. The 18megs you are sending will have to be downloaded. While some will wait the 20 to 50 minutes it might take (depending on connect time), to hear the audio some will not.

Of course, I haven't had dialup in just years, so I don't know if realplayer will start playing the audio before it's been fully downloaded or not and I don't know if doing so affects the quality. I don't really listen to audio, anyway.

Thank you KM for your response. I had never given a thought to the dial uppers, like yourself I haven't had dial up in years and forget about those who still have it. I guess I need to check into seeing if I can compress them more( I'll be learning something new there too). I'm not sure of the realplayer starting before download is complete either, also something I can look at. Mine doesn't but I think that it's in the setup of it that it is possible to do so.
