Hi, hope I've put this in the right board.

I'm writing a story that involves an older woman and a younger man. The story is set when the guy is 18 but he's a school and to make this more plausible it refers to their relationship starting when he was 17. Specifically, he reveals he wasn't the age he claimed but he in fact turned 18 at some point after they met. It's a plot point that she knows very little about him, not even realising he had a birthday at some point during their tryst.

It's not critical so I could change it but I wanted to check if you think that'd get through submission rules because 1) It's not specifically stated they had sex when he was 17, just that she'd met him and got to know him and 2) the explicitly stated sex scenes only happen once he is already 18.

Thanks for your help.

As long as there is no explicit description of sex you should be fine. Unless it is critical to the story, then you could add a year to his age and not have o worry about the site's age limitation.

There could be a problem IF the fact that they are at school means that the sex, even if stated as over 18, reads as if they weren't.

If it's clear that that sex started at 17, there probably will be a problem. You might also think about why it's important to you that it start before 18--and you might get your answer on why it's not acceptable here.

In the FAQ on submission guidelines, Laurel links to this forum post to explain reasons why a story might be rejected.

Was there an underage (under 18 years old) sexual relationship in my story?

This is non-negotiable and has more to do with site policy than an unrealistic view that teenagers don't have sex. A character can refer sex at an early age (eg I lost my cherry at 14), but cannot describe it.

If your story comes across as pedophilia, it will probably be rejected.

Make sure that your characters are over 18 or at least a senior in high school to fix the problem.

(emphasis added)

Based on that guideline, you're in the clear. You could even have the characters talk about it, as long as the events aren't described.
