Assuming I delete, rewrite and resubmit the rewritten story what happens to the older votes?

Are they discarded and the rewrite considered a "new" story?

Thanks

Mike

I think once you delete, the history goes away.

I think if you edit instead, it will keep the history.

As SR said. If you want to maintain the original votes, comments, etc., then you need to edit. It won't appear in the New List, and keep in mind that it will take at least 24 hours for the changes to appear on the public side after the "Edited" submission vanishes from your list.

If you want to start fresh, then you need to delete the original, and submit the new one. It will appear in the New List like any other story. I would strongly suggest putting a notation at the top stating that you are reposting a new, improved version of the story, in order to stop the screams about "stolen stories" and "reposting the same crap twice!" that always come up when you repost without saying so.

Justa - You can send in an editted submission (which would replace the one already posted without affecting views, votes, comments and the like). The other way to do it is to send in a new submission with YOUR STORY NAME-DELETE in the title field (and a note in the text and message fields to delete the story/chapter). Then after the story/chapter is deleted send in your editted story/chapter as a completely new submission. With the second method you'll lose all the views/votes/comments. I've found the second method (in spite of the drawback) is better, and you are more likely to see your editted story/chapter posted completely and correctly with the second method. You will likely save yourself some headaches.

I've posted dozens of edits over the years and never had a problem.

Like anything else, there's the potential for human error, and there have been reports of mistakes over the years.

Most of them were on the part of the editing author, though -- and of late, the majority of those were because of not waiting long enough for the edits to appear on the public side after the "edited" submission vanishes.

If you don't want to lose your current statistics or deal with the commentary that often accompanies reposting a story as "New", just edit. The odds are strongly in your favor of everything going exactly as expected, so long as you follow the proper procedure and cover all your bases.

Always add the URL of your story/chapter ( what's in the browser address bar when you view the first page of the story ) to the "notes" section of an edited submission. I usually add the Lit ID# as well ( can be found by hovering over the link for changing the friendly URL or moderating comments )

These are both unique, and leave no doubt which story/chapter you are editing, which helps eliminate the potential for human error on the website's side. Carefully explain what you're editing in the "notes" section. Story text, title, category, keywords, description...

Only upload/paste text in the "story text" section if that's what you're editing. For any other type of edit, copy/paste the "notes" section after completing it into the "story text" section. There has to be something in that section, but you don't want to accidently upload an incorrect draft when it's completely unnecessary for non-story text edits. Because this will almost always be shorter than 750 words, it will also provide an additional flag to call attention to the fact that this is an edit, and not a regular submission.

If you have any content in a story text edit that could trigger a red flag ( listing any age below 18 in the story for any reason is a perfect example, as is age roleplay ) or worse, had an erroneous rejection on the original submission, always note this content again when you edit in the "notes" section.

Just cover your bases.

My thanks to all who replied. I didn't realize it could be such a potentially complicated process. You all have given me many good ideas. Again thank you.

Mike
