Question about pregnacy

Hi, my girlfriend and I have been dating for a little while and have started talking about having sex in a few months. Now, I will be the second person she's ever been with and she will be my first so we are taking things really slow to make sure that we be have the same feelings for one another. In the mean time though we both enjoy spending time together feeling and touching each other and the other day she asked if we could "dry hump". Now the questions I have is, what is dry humping? I'm assuming it's just grinding our bodies together while we have clothes on. Something else she asked me about though are a few different scenario's such as if it would be possible for her to become pregnant if we both have out pants and underwear on, or just our underwear on? When we are finally ready to start having sex, we will be using a birth control patch and condoms, but I don't see the point of having her start using birth control and possibly having to live with the side effects if we aren't having sex, although if dry humping and lead to her getting pregnant then I suppose it is something that I should bring up with her. I know I have read other posts here that are similar, but atm the search engine isn't working for me and I've looked through some of the pages but I couldn't find the right threads I was looking for. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Get yourself to the planned parenthood website and read everything about birth control. Here, they have a lot of things you can do together without having intercourse (dry-humping is is called frottage):

The only way a woman can get pregnant is if sperm enters her vagina. Pants provide that barrier between your sperm and her vagina, so dry humping is fine. Just underwear is tricky because if you come on her underwear, the sperm can leak potentially leak into her vagina around the leg and crotch openings.

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted to know and that link you gave me was very informative.

I still want to hear what other people have to say about the subject though. :)

The risk of pregnancy without intercourse is slim. I honestly wouldn't worry about it.

However, if you plan to have sex in the future, it is a good idea to have been on birth control for at least a month beforehand if you don't want to use condoms.

The last time I was there it was fall and the leaves were changing. It really was beautiful.

I agree it's a good idea to start hormonal birth control at least a month in advance; however, if there's no room for a pregnancy, that applies whether or not condoms will be used. Inexperienced and/or those who can't afford a baby shouldn't rely on condoms alone, and there's always a chance hormonal bc won't agree with her or work.

So, justcurious, if you're thinking of having sex in the next few months, it wouldn't be a bad idea for her to start the patch now. It'll give her time to adjust, get in the routine, and work out any kinks (sometimes switching methods and strengths is necessary). Hormonal plus condoms every single time is definitely the way to go when you're ready, but starting hormonal ahead of time should eliminate your fears of pregnancy during non-intercourse activities like dry humping. :)

It's great to hear you guys are being responsible! :rose:

I definitely recommend oral sex as a sexual activity with no risk of pregnancy. You can be totally naked, and both partners get a chance to study the other's anatomy up close and experiment with exactly which spots will please their partner.

since she has to start the pill at least a month before it is effective and she does plan to use it I'd think go ahead and start now. That way she will have had the chance to get used to any side effects. Or if the side effects are too bad she will know and can talk to her doctor about trying a different pill or another method of birth control.
