I have been a long time Literotica fan. About 10 years I believe. I have read some very good stories from you wonderful authors that kept me warm on those cold nights, melted my heart when I was lonley, and even taken my breath away. That is my heart felt thank you.

Now down to business I have decided to write my first story and its going to be an original and hopefully quite lengthy. Seeing as it will take a while, I thought I might try a continuation of a story an old author abandoned 3 years ago to test the waters and get some feedback on my writing. This author hasn't posted anything since s/he abandoned this story, and I really feel that it deserves another installment. I have tried contacting them with no response for a while.

With this information what is the etiquette/ rules to writing a continuation of another authors abandoned work?

The etiquette is not to do a direct continuance without the original author's explicit consent (with maybe the original author conveying this to Laurel--otherwise, if someone reports the story, your follow-on might be erased). Create a starting scenario similar to the one they left off--but not identical--and then go from there, if you like. But it's their creation and they don't have to make themselves accessible to deny you permission to take their story over directly.

One other tip. If you did get consent from the author, then when you post the story put in a note at the beginning that you do have permission to do this.

Otherwise readers will troll you and perhaps even try to report the story saying you're ripping someone off.

It's more the etiquette - the original author owns the characters and setting, and what you're proposing is unlikely to come under Fair Use. Just don't.
