I don't know if this has been covered before, if it has, I apologize. Okay, so for the past week or so, my story had retained a number of 11 votes, but now, I just checked, and it dropped to 9. Is it possible for people to retract their votes?

Occasionally the webmistress goes through and removes bogus votes. These could be one bombs from a troll, multiple votes from the same account, as in someone hitting return twice while the site was slow, or multiple votes from the same IP.

I've had votes taken back - usually "1-bombs." Did your rating perchance go up? I was, of course, extremely grateful for the adjustment.

Oh okay, I see now. Yeah, I lost votes but my rating went from 4.55 to 4.56 so that was good at least.

Okay, here's my question. What if you legitimately vote a 1 on a story that really bites. Is that vote removed? what's the point in voting if only high votes remain?

The 1-bombs that are removed aren't removed because they're 1s; they're removed because the person who voted also voted for several other stories the same way in a short time, because the vote came when the story was at a determined position in the top list...

At last! the answer to my most pressing question...

Thank you!

To the best of my knowledge, Laurel has never revealed any of the reasons or methods used for "adjusting" the votes. My impression is multiple one votes from the same address, whether they are given to one story or a number of different storis, are the target.

I was actually watching as I was 1-bombed one time. It was easy to calculate. My story had 21 votes, 20 5's and 1 4. My story was at 4.95 aver 21 votes. I happened back on the story a while later. I had 22 votes and my story was at 4.77. The math was easy. I was 1-bombed.

This same story has been 1-bombed several times. It keeps bobbing up and down like a yoyo. It had been floating around 4.92 for weeks. I looked at it last week and it was down to 4.84! (By now there were over 60 votes.) Then a few days later it was back up to 4.92. GO figure.

I get the impression that one person really doesn't like this story but everone else thinks it's pretty good.

Or maybe it's Amicus getting back at me for calling him an asshole.

Multiple (or fraudulent) votes of ANY value are removed.

To go from 11 votes to 9 votes and only raise the score from 4.55 to 4.56 can't be explained by removing only one votes -- in fact the votes removed in this case were a five and a four; no other combination of two votes would produce those numbers.

Agreed. I had a three removed recently, but a few hours later, it had been replaced:rolleyes:

Several votes removed

I noticed that several of my stories had votes removed recently, within the last 10 days or so. A couple had votes removed on different days.

At least one story had apparent "1" & "5" votes removed.
Last week the number of voted went from 81 to 80, and the average went down.
Then this week, the votes went from 80 to 77 and the average went back up.

I don't like to see an average go down. Who does?
However, I'm glad they are policing it and correcting the wrong voting, whether it be for or against a story or poem.
Thanks, Laurel and Manu!:rose:

I still find that a 1 to 5 rating system where the 3 doesn’t indicate Average, to be decidedly odd.

I wonder how many readers don’t understand the peculiarities of this system and award a 3 or a 4 believing they are being generous.

I have found only one reliable tool to judge how stories are valued by the readers. That is through watching the {read/views}s totals during a contest.

If stories that have been stagnant for weeks suddenly start amassing 10's and 100's of new {read/views}’s after the contest entry story is posted, that to me seems like approval. Someone read a story and enjoyed it enough to seek out others stories written by the same author.
