do you think lit's five point scale is too limiting or do you think it's just fine? hell, do you even like the voting system at all?

me? i think i'd prefer a ten point system. why? because sometimes a four is too high and a three is too low. same for a five. i've read stories that were much better than a four, but hardly perfect and it bothers me that i either have to vote a little too high or a little too low.

i'm a picky bastard.

you?

Personally, I'd prefer a 100 point scale or percentage scale of some sort with multiple vote form to fill out -- Technical Merit, Plot, Stroke Factor, Dialogue, Characterization, and/or some similar combination of factors. In other words, more of a grade than a vote. The top lists could be ranked on the average of the individual scores.

However, as long as the rating system is applied equally to every story, it doesn't really matter to me -- I can live with a three point grading system as easily as a five, ten, or hundred point system to decipher my relative standing with other authors.

Yeah, if you take your grading seriously, I don't think there's any doubt that a ten-point system would be far superior. I think there are definite differences between a 7 and an 8 story that you just can't make on a 5-point scale.

I imagine that the current scale was intended for readers, not writers. It helps you find the better stories when you're browsing. It's not much use to a writer trying to get a handle on how good something is.

well, you have to take it somewhat seriously otherwise you'd just turn the voting feature off. i try to take it with a grain of salt. it has it's uses.
