Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, but is it possible for a first outbreak of herpes to occur several months after a sexual relationship with a possibly infected partner?

I was in a relationship with someone last year, we broke up in Sept, I moved on with life, but about 5 months later, I noticed a blister, that soon turned in about 3 on my penis, on the shaft near the head. Coincidentally, I'd just had sex a little on the rough side about a day or so before I noticed the blister, so it wasn't as alarming. But last week, it happened again... Coincidentally, after getting a pretty rough hand job.

Thoughts? I'm thinking of going and getting an std test, but unfortunately, that's not possible right this instant.

Thank you in advance.

It's not the right place, no, but it is possible for herpes symptoms to appear months/years after sleeping with the infected partner (making you a carrier also).

See a physician ASAP not likely Herpies, but not somthing to mess around with.

Thank you very much for the information, I plan on getting tested, I just need to see if there are any clinics in my area that offer free std tests, or wait until I get health insurance. But thank you!

I'm sure wherever you live has a state Health Services department that does testing fo STD's. Not recently I heard on the news about something (not health related) that happened here in Phoenix at the Health department where they test. Check that out asap and don't have sex until you know what is going on with your body.

When in doubt see a doctor. You won't find such answers on the web; well you will but how can you be sure unless you truly get medical tests done?

Since no one here seems to have experience with this I'll add my two cents. Yes, it's possible. And it happens pretty often. I have oral herpes, not genital as far as I know, but oral. And I don't know where I got it. I've never been with anyone who had a sore, I've never had anyone tell me they were infected, nothing. But a few years ago during a time when I wasn't seeing anyone and dealing with health concerns (that's important) I got a sore on my face. So a lot of people have some form of the virus that causes the occasional coldsore, no big deal. But I got a couple more and then got tested and yep, it was what I thought it was. Apparently the outbreak was brought on by the health stuff. Both the stress of dealing with it and the fact that my immune system was compromised at the time. I still get occasional sores but never anything too bad. Only a few per year and they're gone within a week or so most of the time.

So if your experience is anything like mine then you may well be infected. It's manageable and not really that big a deal these days. I've not even taken meds for years and I'm pretty much fine. Of course I've told everyone about it but I've never been told I spread it.

The other thing to consider is how often you've gotten blisters from sex and/or handjobs before. I don't recall it ever happening to me. It sounds like it doesn't happen to you either. I don't think I know anyone it does happen to, honestly. So if that's unusual there's a far higher chance of infection.

Hope that helped.

*At least 30 years ago I contracted Herpes. Regularly I had an outbreak on the same spot on my lip. I read somewhere that putting ice on the sore would lesson it. I tried the ice a number of times without much luck. Then one Saturday Morning I began to feel the tingle of an outbreak. I immediately applied an ice cube and when it melted another. I kept this up well into the night even though the cold was painful.

Suddenly there was a snap. Loud and physical. I have never had another outbreak. My wife who I met a few years later never contracted Herpes.

Many years later I gave platelets at City of Hope. Some months later I was contacted to see if I would take part in a study. The study involved a herpes which apparently most people contract but is rather asymptomatic. I was called in a number of times to give blood samples. Next they would be taking a pencil eraser sized tissue sample.

The person drawing the blood was an M.D. I related the above. I was never asked to come in again. No explanation. Just dropped.

I am not making any claims, but wondering about others experience.

I had my first "cold sore" when I was 7. No idea where it came from. I was a pesky little tyke who chased the girls and kissed them whenever I could, but that's not necessarily where I contracted it. I'd get an outbreak occasionally, like once every other year or several times a year.

In my early 20s, my doctor looked at it, declared it oral herpes. He said it was not contagious except when I had an active outbreak. He did not formally test it.

When I feel a tingle, I ice it for 5 to 10 minutes several times each hour till the tingle goes away. That shortens the outbreak a lot. In addition to the ice I also take an Acyclovir prescription. That's an anti viral that keeps the virus from being able to replicate.

I've never passed it to a partner.
