Question About "Favoriting" an Author

Since writers can now monitor the activity of readers via the Recent Activity option, I had a question about something. I had originally posted this in the HT forum but really did not get an answer, so I'll try again here.

Okay, so I am seeing that I am being set as a "favorite" author for some readers, and then again I am being "un-favorited". My question is if there is a limit to the number of authors a reader can "favorite" so as to explain why I am being removed as a "favorite" by some readers. Just trying to make some sense of it all. In the end I guess it really doesn't matter, but I've been curious.

As far as I know there is no limit to the number of authors a reader can favorite.

What I think is happening is that some readers use the favorites page instead of their browser's bookmarks to find an author when they want to continue reading that author's work.. When they're done reading that author's stories, they unfavorite him the same way they would remove a bookmark they no longer use.

There are no limits. The top authors here are on 2,000+ favorites pages. As to why you would be un-favorited there could be several reasons. As rgraham666 said someone could be done with your work and not be the type to revisit stories and just click you off.

Also sometimes if someone sees you on other peoples favorites pages they may bookmark you to check you out then decide your stuff is not for them.

Unfortunately I feel if they kick you off so to speak it means they did not like your stuff, as to me, if I did like someones writing and I had read everything they put out I would keep them on the list so I could check for their new material.

Any like anything else here it boils down to people and no two are the same. The important thing is not to let it bother you if someone kicks you off. Never let it stop you from writing. I mean lets face it it is a shot in the arm (or ego) to get put on a fav's list but a bummer when you get booted.

As you kep writing it will fluctuate whenever you post new you will have some people picking you up but generally the ydo not all stay with you. In the last week I have had 5 people favorite me but one dropped me so it just keeps revolving. Just do your thing and go for the ride.

rgraham666 - hit it on the head. People favor stories much the same way. Easier to find at a latter date. Nothing to worry about when unfavored. I wondered when I first got favored and it bothered me when I got unfavored.

I do believe it when they have read the stories you have written that they wanted to read, they may remove you. They might add you again at a latter date. I remember when I reached plateaus of 50, 100, 200, I was so excited. I think I'm in the top 50 on Lit now.

It's been asked if you should thank readers or question them when your name is withdrawn. My answer is 'No'. They have ther reasons and if they wanted you to know they would tell you. If they do add you to their list and send you a feedback telling you so, a 'thank you' is not out of order.

It's just nice to know that you'v been favored.

is there a way to see how many people have you marked as a "favoriate"

There isn't. I had posted a thread once a "petition" sort of to try to get a bunch of authors to say they would want that feature.

The site lists the top 250 but let's face it the majority of us are no where near that. You can see back as far as 30 days of activity so technically if you want to print that once a month you can try to keep track. I tried it for a couple of months but sometimes the 30 days overlaps and it's not that easy. Plus I had already been writing for a few months so no idea what I had before that.

Back in December some of the changes that were made was that at the bottom of each story you can see number of views, comment, and how many fav's that individual story is on. So I would think the site could do it for us even if they just updated it monthly it would be nice to know.

Maybe if enough people contact them about it they would consider it.

Yes, there is. There's a list of the most "favorite" authors. I'm on the low end of it. I saw it once, now can't recall how to get back to it. But a list "does" exist.

Thanks all for the info. No, it doesn't affect me, was just curious. I write and will continue doing so. Don't even look at the voting scores anymore, but like getting comments and feedback.

The list only gives the top 250.

If you want to find it again it is on Lit's home page read through it and click on "sneak peek" you can find a lot of top lists there. Top 250 authors, stories, most commented things like that.

being in S&M, what I would love to do is send an email to everyone that has me marked as a Fav author :)

Thanks for clearing things up for me a bit.

Personally I would never send a message to somebody asking me why they unfavorited me. It has happend to me once in the short time I have been writing here, and after being a little peeved, I just let it go.

I think if I sent a message to every person who unfavorited me asking why it would make me look very insecure.

As for thanking people for favoriting my work I only did it once so far when somebody actually left a comment saying they had done so. I did once leave a comment on one of my stories collectively thanking people for favoriting my work.

Yeah you definitely don't want to ask "why?" does make you look needy.

On the otherhand thanking everyone would look a little funny as well. Like you don't expect it or something.

Reminds me of something my old man told me about how to act when you sleep with a girl as far as not bragging goes.

"It's like a scoring a touchdown don't jump around like a fool act like you've been there before and will be again."

So never be surprised if you go on a favorites expect it.

Besides being that grateful would ruin our image as being the all knowing all powerful Author.

This is America, anything is possible, but the harder you work at it the more likely it is to happen :)

Hotchick,

I don’t fully agree with that, but I do see your point and where you are coming from. For me, I want to improve as a writer. Have no problem taking honest critique, but I do have issues when people post “hope you die of aids”. I will ask people what they thought about a story, and what would make it better for them.

With that said, I know my weakest link (okay 2 of them). I write to have an audience like Selena Kitt (I need a word to describe her – guys they call other guys studs so what can I use to describe how awesome she is?)?

My motive might be different too than others as I want to follow in Selena’s footsteps while I make my own path.

Maybe Darkinaid will check in on this, but it's my impression that there is a set number that a reader can reach in registering both favorite author and favorite story. I think when they reach that limit they have to pare down to add others.

Isn't is the same thing as how many times an author or his/her stories can be favorited.

hopefully those words wont come back and bite me! I did get a "fan" email from a guy telling me he wanted to do me (but he was a bit more ....)

Tilt. At the moment you are #34 out of over 5,000 authors. I'd hardly consider that the low end of anything (unless you consider the lowest end to be at the top).

If there is a limit it is extremely high. I was just recently put on a favorites page of a guy that had so many authors on it that it might have been easier to count the authors that weren't on it.

There used to be a limit way back when...was probably a DB limit at the time, I reached it and had to decided who to delete and who to add. Since then the limit has been raised...most likely due to a change in type of the element in the DB.

Tracking Favoritingses

I honestly wish I had responded to folks who had favorited me in the beginning, or at least written the names down. A handful of readers (only a handful, to be sure) have asked if they could be put on an email list of readers to notify when I put something new up. At first, I thought that was the most ego-tastic thing I could do...

...but then I realized that I probably should've done it. Literotica is a big enough site that you can easily lose track of authors and posts. The reader that casually likes your writing today might really love the stuff you put out later as you continue to write and improve with experience. Yet you can only look back to 30 days of activity.

Also, I would agree that the favorite/unfavorite practice is probably a mixture of motives. I've had several readers favorite one chapter of a series only to drop it as soon as the next one is up, which they then favorite until there's something new. Others may simply have found they don't appreciate my stuff as much as they did at first, and other readers simply have a change of taste.

you've almost reached 1000!

Thanks SR. Last time I checked I was around the 160 point, I had no idea I'd shot up so high, so I am impressed. I have been getting alot of alerts saying I've been "favorited" but also some of the opposite ones, which was what motivated me to ask this question to begin with.

Hey Scouries, I haven't seen anything out of you since the Summer contest a ways back. Of course I usually hang out in the EF, only stopped by the AH after not getting an answer to my question on the HT forum (I tried to use the correct forum for the question).

Gee, I really must have ticked you off. Sure glad you don't hold grudges :)
