Question about dreams...

I'm curious to know what everyone's opinion is on dreams. Do you think they are completely meaningless? Are they trying to convey some message to you from your sub-concious? Any other theories?

I dream all the time, every night vividly so I just thought I'd see what fellow Lit members are up to at night.... those of us who sleep that is :p

Go ahead and share your theories or maybe a dream you've had recently.

Hmm.. I see someone is trying to make an impact on the Lit community in their early postings.. Good for you blue.

Dreams? Dreams can be messages from your subconscious, snips of memory from past lives, messages from the Gods, predictions of the future, or just simply that, dreams.

... sometimes yes, sometimes no. You see, *most* of what we perceive as being reality is created by the mind - what we know as reality are assumptions that the mind and the perceptive organs automatically makes pulled over a framework, like rubber skin over mechanical parts. We never see the frame work, we never know exactly what it looks like, we only know that it gives form to what little our fragile minds can understand.

When we dream, it's as if the rubber skin of our assumptions is let loose from the frame work to take whatever shape we so desire... or at least it seems that way.

Perhaps there is more to it... We never *do* see the frame, after all.

If this doesn't make any sense, don't bother with it. I'm tired and I'm babbling. :)

Thanks Moridin :) Dreams have always been a big thing for me and I've always been fascianted with what they might mean. I swear sometimes when I go to bed at night I might as well stay up because I dream all night anyway. It's like watching an all night feature movie or something lol

Babble anytime Black_Bird :)

I've read some of your other posts and it's always a pleasure. I tend to babble myself at times so I know where you are coming from.

Do you still do your readings and tarot cards?

I recently had a nightmare.

A nightmare because it was emotionally upsetting.

I think that dreams can be powerful tools for living.

I approach my dreams, the noteworthy ones anyway, as a text. Meaning is always plural. I have an initial response and then upon further reflection and examiniation I try to discover what the dream is telling me about me.

All people and symbols in my dreams are manifestations of myself.

Hmm... No. Not at the time being.

How do you personally go about decifering what the symbols in your dreams are and what they might mean?

I write the dream down. Don't be afraid of it- it's just a dream- embrace it. I write down what I recall of the dream. If you try this, allow yourself to feel the emotions you felt in the dream- do not allow unpleasant emotions to interfere with this task- you do not have to share your thoughts or feelings with anyone- you can burn the paper when you are done. Allow yourself that liberty or the exercise is pointless.

Having done this, I look at the dream superficially and how I feel about it. This is important. Most often, my feelings regarding the dream correspond to some real life feelings I am experiencing. Fear. Joy. Indecision. Etc. I tell myself that it is perfectly all right to feel the way that I am feeling. I do not have to justify or explain my feelings to anyone. No one is asking me to, anyway.

Now I look to the individual "tokens" in the dream. And this is what they are: tokens. Images, colors (yes, I dream in color- I read somewhere that this is a somewhat rare trait, and I cannot understand it at all. Surely most people dream in color?). The tokens, as I have now named them, can be anything that stands out in my dream- objects, people, voices.

I examine them in the context of the dream, noting emotions and thoughts about them.

Now comes the deep shit (deep for me anyway!)

I said that dreams can be powerful tools for living. They are descriptive- but they are also prescriptive, and here is where they can help me (for instance, a nightmare that reflects a fear also prescribes a negotiation of the fear).

I didn't mean to write a thesis on this topic- but it is very stimulating to me because I did this just this past week- therefore my longwindedness.

A word about people in the dream. They are not people. They are images, symbols and tokens. At a superficial level, I respond to the images of these people (often people who are important figures in my life) as if their images were concrete reality. In such a state, I have submitted to the dream. The dream has power over me. My objective is to claim this power for myself. In order to do this, I must get "beyond" the dream itself and my feelings about it. The image of my beloved in a dream is simply the image of my beloved in a dream- it is NOT my beloved. The image of an antagonist, a rival or villain, is just an image though it has taken the FORM of someone, perhaps, that I know.

To get beyond the dream, I look at the tokens as a part of myself. There is nothing in my dream that is not already a part of me because I am the source of the dream.

I wish I could explain this better. It's a very intuitive process and it takes time, practice, and a lot of self-love.

I really am my own boss, ya know.

Wow... thanks for sharing Riff :D I dream in color as well... I didn't know that it was supposed to be some rare thing lol Now I feel special ;)

I actually did write down the dream I had last night so it was funny you mentioned that. It's the first time I've done that.

Thanks for the advice Riff :)

She dreams in color, she dreams...

I dream in color too, but I've never tried to analyze them, I think I'm fucked up enough as it is! :D

this type may be hard to read, but it's easier to follow than a dream

I used to dream in black& white as a kid, but then again, we didn't get color tv until 72 or so.

my dreams aren't that vivid, they have color now, but I usually dream that it's night, so colors aren't that obvious.

I've also been known to dream about people asking me about the time of day & the weather forecast, stuff so bland I can't tell if it's prophecy or fantasy or just something designed to bore my back to sleep.;)

I usually share the same opinion about myself! lol :D So we have something in common!

You never fail to crack me up patient1 :D Nobody gets inside my head like you do ;) lol Thanks again for your help!!!

I almost always dream in color. Usually my dreams are very vivid, but I'm confused in them, not really connecting things together.

My dreams are usually symbolic, but they are hard to crack!
Always an extension of how I'm feeling at the time.

One thing I'm trying to do right now is control my dreams, or influence what I dream about. It usually only works for the non-REM dreams, or when I'm just drifting off.
