I have always wanted to do a mindless beach poetry poem
using beach music song titles as the lines. Would this be
considered plagiarism (?). Thanks for any input. I hope
everyone is having a great summer. I am. sandspike

I've read poems that heavily relied on song titles. I suppose if you give credit to the song writers, then it's okay. Maybe just put the titles in italics. Do you plan to add your own words around the titles, or will this be titles only?

What used to be called plagiarism is now called sampling. So if you want to run away with a little surfer girl, go for the buzz.
I look forward to reading it.

I've done it. Hell, I'm always sneaking music and literature references into my poems. My dream is that someone else sees it, too. :)

I don't think it is plagiarism unless you use more than than the title or a phrase. I am currently collecting SPAM headers with the thought of poetizing them. If I am guilty of plagiarism let the Nigerians sue me! (Of course they will have to send me some money first.) :)

I find it hard to believe that someone doesn't know when they're plagiarizing as opposed to writing about something to honor it, because they love it. You could argue that all found poetry is plagiarism, too--but what great stuff we'd have missed out on if no one wrote it.

And there really really really is nothing new under the sun. It's just shifting words around.

;)

Thanks for the input. Carolina Beach Music has its roots
in R&B and blues. They are songs you shag or bop to.
I will try and finish the poem next week, see if you know
any of the songs. You may not if you aren't from the
southern east coast. Ahh! Mindless beach poetry:
BECAUSE LIFE SHOULD BE A CORONA COMMERCIAL.
thanks again, sandspike

Here's a tribute to Muddy Water's, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke by Rod Stewart, speaking of R&B and blues...

I remember
When I was only seventeen
The bohemian poet
And disciple of the streets
Or was I just a little kid
Searching for identity in '63

Heard it on the radio
On a cold December night
It came burning down the air waves
Like a savior's shinin' light
All the way from the U.S.A.
Across the Atlantic far away
The magic came

The house began to rock
With Cupid and his bow
The hootchy kootchy man's
Lonely harp began to blow
Little did I know that
nothing in my life
Would ever be the same

Stayed up all night
Playin' every 45
Tryin' to sound like you
Strummed my guitar in bed
Till my fingers bled
Tryin' to play like you

*Thank you, Sam, thank you, Otis
Thank you Muddy
For the sounds you made
Thank you, Sam, thank you, Otis
Thank you, Muddy
For the times we shared
And they carry on

I saw Otis back in 1965
Tears in my eyes
As he sung "These Arms Of mine"
But angels needed a soul man
For the celestial blues band
They took him home (took you home)

Oh, what I'd give to see
That red mohair suit and hear
"Dock Of The Bay"
Or Sam in his two tone
Singin' "Bring It On Back Home"
What a show that would be

(*Repeat)

If I sound sentimental
It's because this blue-eyed soul boys
Got so much respect
My gratitude to you
Runs deep, proud and true
I will never forget

**Thank you, Sam, thank you, Otis
Thank you Muddy
For the sounds you made
Thank you, Sam, thank you, Otis
Thank you, Muddy
For the times you gave

(**Repeat)
Thank you, Sam, thank you, Sam
Thank you, Otis, thank you, Muddy
You'll never, never fade away ...

Thanks Tung

Rod does have soul roots as well as many of the english
singers of that time. I used to belong to a Yahoo group
into R&B. Many folks said video has killed soul. The music
is now made to the flick. I hope we don't have poetry
video, well maybe an erotic poem w/ Dustystarr. Wicked Eve,
etc.
