I was cruising the web looking into the origins of the original Church, Catholics, and Hebrews. Then I came upon this on Queen Jezebel, the Phoenician wife of King Ahab of Israel.

Exerpts from above link: "For more than two thousand years, Jezebel has been saddled with a reputation as the bad girl of the Bible, the wickedest of women..........

.......Every biblical word condemns her: Jezebel is an outspoken woman in a time when females have little status and few rights; a foreigner in a xenophobic land; an idol worshiper in a place with a Yahweh-based, state-sponsored religion; a murderer and meddler in political affairs in a nation of strong patriarchs; a traitor in a country where no ruler is above the law; and a whore in the territory where the Ten Commandments originate.

......In a kinder analysis, Jezebel emerges as a fiery and determined person, with an intensity matched only by Elijah's. She is true to her native religion and customs. She is even more loyal to her husband. Throughout her reign, she boldly exercises what power she has. And in the end, having lived her life on her own terms, Jezebel faces certain death with dignity
.

Now there is a book out named 'Jezebel: The Untold Story of the Bible's Harlot Queen'.on Amazon.

A review says this:From Publishers Weekly
Like other villains of the Bible, Jezebel, it turns out, may have been gravely mischaracterized throughout history. Unlike Judas, of whom there are alternative, rehabilitative stories, the only historical account of Jezebel's life exists in the Books of Kings. What Hazleton argues, however, is that this account is self-subverting and has been misconstrued throughout history. Interlacing fictional narrative with engaging commentary, Hazleton points out that Jezebel was never sexually promiscuous or even accused of being so; the word harlot only ever referred to her unfaithfulness to Yahweh. And while Elijah is a universally loved biblical figure (Hazleton gives examples of Jewish, Christian and Muslim reverence for him), her reading of Kings reveals him to be the worst sort of fundamentalist—the kind who thinks that all who oppose the true faith should be killed. Hazleton draws from a deep, impressive well of scholarship and includes a fascinating travelogue of her journeys to the places described in Kings. In addition, she provides her own rich, nuanced translation and uses it to highlight the wordplay in which the biblical authors frequently engage. Replete with apt comparisons to modern Middle Eastern conflicts, this revisionist portrait is equal parts fun and sobering—a colorful history lesson that's sorely needed. (Oct. 16)

Anyone here into books of this nature? It may well become my new hobby.

I love historical treatments of the Bible. Though I have to say I've read very few, mostly magazine articles. Thanks for the link!

The son of Jezebel and Ahab was named Ahaziah. (I Kings 22:40). Ahaziah is a Yahwehistic name. This suggests that Jezebel and Ahab worshiped Yahweh, as well as Baal. Many Bible scholars believe that Psalm 45 was written to commemorate the marriage of Jezebel and Ahab. Nothing in the Old Testament suggests that Jezebel was promiscuous.

My study of the Old Testament has lead me to believe that the conflict among the Israelites was not between worshipers of Yahweh and worshipers of Baal, but between those who thought Yahweh was the only god, and those who worshiped Yahweh, Baal, and other deities, such as Asherah.

You are very welcome! This is all news to me Perg.

It has always been my understanding, passed down from 'elders' whom believe in God, as I do, that Jezebel was considered evil in her time. What always puzzled me was that she was simultaneously considered extremely loyal to her 'assigned' husband.

I interpret that she was also dedicated to her Phonecian beliefs in various God/Goddesses. That is understandable considering her upbringing. It is also my understanding she was no different than any other wife of a king in the old testament era.

I suspect, as alluded to in several references, she pissed off a highly respected priest or prophet as a manner of respect or defense of her husband. Whatever she said or acted upon did not set right with this respected person's PERSONAL feelings and thus that individual retaliated in a violent manner.

I had to reread your post. Particularly the 2nd paragraph. I have read the same of Yahweh. This bit of information on Queen Jezebel is slowly growing in intrigue these days. If you discover more on Yahweh and Jezebel, please PM me with links.
