Hello Everyone!!

Not sure if anyone has seen the news lately but I thought this was important enough to share.

Sunday magnitude 9.0 quake struck about 7 a.m. under water was centered about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

Now hours later the death toll is rising, many missing and millions displaced. Here is the latest records, from CNN.

DEATH TOLLS
SRI LANKA
Sri Lankan military authorities report more than 10,000 people killed. Tamil Tiger rebels report 2,000 dead in the territory they hold in the northeast of the country.

INDIA
At least 6,200 killed by waves that flooded the southern coast, official media report.

INDONESIA
News agencies report more than 4,350 killed, many of them in Aceh in northern Sumatra.

THAILAND
Thai authorities report at least 866 people dead.

MALDIVES
46 people are dead and more than 70 missing, according to Hassan Sobir, the Maldives high commissioner.

FS,

I know that your parents are in Sri Lanka, I hope that they are fine. I'll be saying a little prayer for them and all the other victims.

A horrible tragedy. There is no tsunami warning system in place for the Indian Ocean. If they can now put such a warning system in place, at least it will be one small good thing to come out of this horrible event.

Thanks moonlight!!

They are okay. The entire island was hit hard and seems like there isn't a place that was spared.

There are relief efforts on the way in Sri Lanka and other countries as well.

You are right! Warning might have helped, just how much i don't know but it would have at least prepared the people a little.

The maldives was entirely covered by the waves at one point, it seems that the some of the islands have still not reappeared.
I think this is one tragedy that will be remembered in Indian Ocean.

They speak of 50 000 dead now.
And I can only think of one. Possible. Unaccounted for. Didn't know he was there until just now.
On the phone waiting, hoping. Nothing else to do.

Shit.

Yes, I know the feeling. My parents are in Sri Lanka and I had not heard from them since Sunday. Last night I finally talked to my Mom. My Dad's been hurt but other than that they are ok. Relief is slow and many wounded cannot get the medical attention they need.
My bros and I are trying to add to the relief efforts. Red Cross is accepting clothing and food donations in most cities.

I'll keep your friend in my thoughts for you.

The news are starting to look real aweful here in Sweden. :( :( :(

They are talking about more deaths than on Estonia and we lost 500 on that ferry.

The travel agencies alone has more then 800 unaccounted for in Khao Lak .. a village that is more or less swept away.

I hope your friend is safe Liar.

Very sad and frightening no matter where you live. My thoughts go out to those of you who have been directly affected by this. Please know that you're not alone.

I am soo sorry. I will keep them all in my thoughts.

There are so many missing that all one can do is wait and hope. I think that helping with the relief effort is a way for me to feel better about the situation.

68 000

insane

But i found my friend. He called his family just now. He and his group is alive and well. They were inland, and are now down by the coast helping locate other tourists.

wow, last time I checked there's 68,000 dead total, confirmed mind you, and more than 30 of those are from Indonesia, and some people are afraid epedemics will sweep through the places and death toll could be more than 100,000.

I'm sorry to those that have lost or will lose loved ones, lots of US and other tourists are unnacounted for. I know saying sorry sounds cheap and doesn't really do anything, but yes I offer my condolences, I'm sorry, I just don't know what to say.

Much of it could've been avoided if people were alerted, many seismologists actually knew of the 9.0 earthquake before the Tsunamis arrived, and well if they alerted authorities a lot of people would've been saved. That's what pisses me off most.

Oh yeah because seismologists actually realized that there the Tsunami would probably happen they later thought about putting a warning system, they'll be doing that in the next few years. Seismologists actually have a lot of data in that area of the ocean because the largest earthquakes in the world happen to come out of that area.

They just don't warn people . . .

Not a problem about the link, came from a friend from Singapore, but as I said, the biggest problem is that many seismologists saw the earthquake and had notions of tsunamis hours before anything happened, tsunamis tend to travel 60 mph? if I remember correctly from Middle School. They also aren't noticed by ships in the ocean because the current moves under them and doesn't affect them. I actually am very pissed off that the scientists didn't do anything, it makes me wonder considering I plan to head into phsyics later in life.
