I am new to the forum and I have read alot of terrific stories. I have seen stories with different endings than what the author has originally produced.

Is this OK. There are a couple of stories that I would like to offere a differnt view on but I do not wish to "mess up the apple cart" ? Is there a set of rules to follow when creating a change in direction of the story.

Thanks

Don't touch a story without the express permission of the author - period. It's good you asked, because without permission it's called copyright infringement.

Some authors don't mind, but most go ballistic.

Yes, go with Cloudy's advice. As I writer, I have no interest in having another writer take over any of my stories.

Listen to Cloudy's advice.

I agree with drk about anything I have written, as well.

If you've got a really good idea then why not contact the author?

I know that in the past other authors have asked (and been allowed) to use characters from my tales in their stories and if someone should come along with an idea for a different look at one of my tales then at least I'd be prepared to swap a couple of messages on it.

My latest story - Military Engagement came about as a result of someone saying, "What would happen if Sarah from Market Forces got involved in.....?" and an exchange of emails followed but with me writing the end result.

I'm all for interaction - but, that's the key it has to be (unlike a lot of the subjects covered in my writing!) consensual. Some writers are very protective of their characters and situations and rightly so, others may be more willing to see different things happen to them.

I can imagine that there is often a different side of a story to be told - from a different characters perspective, for example. That can be pretty challenging writing, I think and might produce interesting results, but like everyone else here has said, don't go there without the original authors wholehearted support.
