I was listening to the Blues Brothers 2000 Sountrack this evening (the music..dammit, it's good!) and I had a thought.

What kind of band would I put together if I could pick the members, living or dead?

So here's the challenge. Pick a genre of music, and put together a band. Rock, Metal, Punk, Jazz, and Country are all in play but, for obvious reasons, classical would be more of a challenge (unless you put together a small group). I'm going to impose some parameters on your homemade band.

It has to have a lead singer, up to four guitarists (one bass, one lead, one rhythm, and one other, or any combo of the three) and a drummer. A keyboardist is optional. You can have a horn section, but you can have no more than three. If it's a classical group, then you get no more than six.

You get some bonus points if the band writes their own stuff.

No backup singers. Let the band members do that if they want. :)

I'll post mine later.

This is a good ?..I think since im more into metal and old punk i would have to start with a punk singer maybe some one like Henry Rollins to keep the energy going ..Guitarist would have to be heavy and technical so i would have to go with Dime Bag Darrel from Pantera and Kirk Hammet from Metallica..For bass players lets throw in Flea from the Chilli Peppers..Now for a drummer hmmm ..Well no one will probably know this guy but i guess my drummer would be Robo just to keep the punk edge going..Thats my band nuff said..

Well, I'm a total metal head, so I've put together a band right here that if you went to their concert you'd never hear again.

Lead Singer: David Draiman
Guitars: Kirk Hammet, Pheonix, Flavia Canel, Daron Malakian
Drummer: John Dolmayan

(For those who don't know, David Draman is the singer from Disturbed, Kirk Hammet is the guitarist of Metallica, Phoenix is the bassist for Linkin Park, Flavia Canel was the lead guitarist of Drain STH, Daron Malakian is the guitarist of System of a down and John Dolmayan is the drummer of System.)

All Girl Modern Rock Band:

Lead Vocals / Rhythm Guitar--Nikka Costa

Bass--Michelle Ndgeocello (sp?)

Lead Guitar--Melissa Etheridge

Acoustic Guitar--Amy Ray (Indigo Girls)

Piano and Keyboards--Tori Amos

Drums--Sheila E.

All sing backing vocals...........

Maynard James Keenan (Tool) - Vocals
Eric Clapton - Lead Guitar
Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) - Rhythm Guitar
Sting (The Police) - Bass
Sarah McLachlan - Piano, Vocals
Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) - Drum machine, Synth, Producer.

I think the above would be the one of the best sounding bands ever put together... but - one problem! I don't think their personalities would mesh well.

jazz is the only way.....

can't say that I'd prefer a rock band....how about some of the best jazz around?

singer - Sarah Vaughn or Ella
bass - Mingus
Piano - Monk
drums - got to be Buddy
and for horns - how about the TOP horn line??

Now that would be some funky jazz!!
Call me funny, or call me strange....just call me!!! :p

Lead Singers-Jim Morrison,Janis Joplin, and John Lennon.

Guitars- Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, and George Harrison.

Drums-Keith Moon, and Buddy Rich.

:D

My all time rock band would have Jimi and Stevie Ray on guitar, Keith Moon on drums, Jack Bruce on base, and Mick Jaggar fronting. My optional keyboardist would be Bruce Hornsby.

Singers: Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt
Guitar: Eric Clapton
Drums: Neal Peart (Rush)
Horn section: Tower of Power
Piano: Billy Joel

Lead Singer: Eddie Kowalczyk
Lead Guitar: Tom Morello
Rhythm Guitar: Mark Tremonti
Bass: Rudy Sarzo
Drums: Brad Wilk

I'll call that funky jazz band and raise you one, without using any of the people you used (which sucks because you have my drummer and my horn section!).

Lead Singer - Diana Krall (who also plays keyboard)
Bass Guitar - Stanley Clarke
Lead/Rhythm Guitar - Stanley Jordan
Keyboards - Herbie Hancock
Drummer - Art Blakey
Horn Section - Maynard Ferguson (Trumpet), John Coltrane (Saxes), Glenn Miller (Trombone)

And for some rock and roll artists with funky jazz soul:

Lead Singer - Sting
Bass Guitar - Nathan East
Lead Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Rhythm Guitar - Tracy Chapman
Keyboards - Bruce Hornsby
Drummer - Stewart Copeland (with Sheila E running a close second)
Horn Section - Clarence Clemons and the Earth, Wind, and Fire horns.

But why not go for all funk?

Lead Singer - George Clinton (Or Janis Joplin. I'm not sure)
Bass Guitar - Bootsy Collins
Lead Guitar - Prince
Keyboards - Dr. John
Drummer - Sheila E
Horn Section - This is where the TOP Horns can go :)

And my rock and roll all-star band:

Lead Singer - Roger Daltrey (and I'm not even comfortable with that choice. Maybe someone like Chrissie Hynde)
Bass Guitar - Chris Squire (Yes. and a close second to John Entwhistle and John McVie)
Lead Guitar - Eric Clapton
Rhythm Guitar - Brian May
Rhythm/Lead - Jimmy Page
Bonus Guitarist - Eddie van Halen
Drums - John Bonham (Sorry, Keith Moon and Mick Fleetwood!)
Keyboard - Billy Joel

Whew!! :)

Re: Re: jazz is the only way.....

I would agree with you on most except maybe Bill Watrous on trombone....love those multiphonics!

A Funk/Soul Band

Vocals: Southside Johnny Lyons
Vocals: James Brown
Bass: Rocco Prestia (second choice: Bootsie)
Guitar: Johnnie Guitar Watson
Guitar: Prince
Guitar: Duane Allman
Organ: Booker T. Jones
Piano: Dr. John
Horns: TOP Horns, minus Emilio (but with his charts), plus Maceo Parker on sax, Fred Wesley and La Bamba on 'bones.

OK, it's a BIG horn line, but you already broke your own rule of three with the five-piece TOP line. *g*

Besides, can you really have too many horns?
