Don't attempt to make toast whilst answering the door.

We had a late night last night, drunk too much wine and consequently, breakfast was late... or maybe we were just not 'quite awake'.

The toast jammed in the new toaster bought at the weekend. We got that slice out and started over just as someone knocked at the door, it was our cleaner calling to explain she wouldn't be cleaning as her husband had just had surgery to his arm.

When we returned to the kitchen, the new toaster was on fire. Flames a foot high, clouds of smoke and the damn thing was infront of the electrical socket.

Well we put it out, fortunately by unplugging it before dropping it into the sink and running the tap. The smell was/is unbelievable. Damn Spanish consumer goods, no safety cut out, could have been a disaster since the house is essentially of wooden construction and the old part, where we are still living because the builder still hasn't finished our new apartment is yet to be fireproofed.

Still, no real harm done, and we live to fight another day. It wakes one up :D

The make UFESA - avoid.

Glad to hear you're OK, neon.

I do dislike excitement first thing in the morning though.

Foot-high flames (above the rim) are normal for breads. Items with higher sugar content can be downright spectacular! Pop-tarts really put up an amazing volume of flame.

UFESA: got that.

Blessed are the Fireman... for they shall inherit the hose.

I don't think we'll try the 'pop-tart' variation! I have an aversion to flames.

All safe Rob - normally I like the morning surprise the wife presents me with :D

Well-told tale, neon.

(I'm glad everything and everyone is safe.)

Thank you. This was one of the most interesting, humorous and helpful threads I've read here (despite the fact it's not writerly ;) ).

Myself, I require utterly dull and routine first waking hours. Gr.

Bet that got shot of your hangover pretty damn quickly Will

Still could have been worse, glad you managed to control the situation.

Glad you came through this without any more damage.

I'm glad the house didn't catch.

That's why I prefer toaster ovens. No problem with things getting stuck in the slots. Most of these toasters were made to go with machine-sliced bread. You have anything that's shaped different, you're going to have trouble.
