Hi All -

I have been a long time lurker and have enjoyed reading all the posts - very educational. I just had my first story published and have a couple of basic questions.

I am in the process of finishing my second story but had a couple of questions. I was hoping for more feedback from private messages but have received none. How many people "allow" public comments? I was hesitant for fear of negative feedback?

Also, is there anyway of knowing how many people have selected the story as a favorite?

Here is the link to the story, so far its holding at a 4 ranking which I am pleasantly surprised by. All feedback is welcome!

Thanks!

Hey there beachlover. I'm a huge lurker myself and have only recently come out of my shell so to speak. As far as public comments, I allow them on my stories. I don't believe that all negative feedback is bad feedback. I think there's a distinct difference between the two. I think bad feedback is flat out bashing, critique without suggestions, attacks on the author and not the story itself. Just because a person doesn't praise your work doesn't necessarily mean they're giving negative feedback. Like several people have said here, you can take suggestions, feedback and comments with a grain of salt. Believe what you want, throw away the rest, if you so choose. Ultimately, it's your story to write how you deem fit. If you don't like what somebody has to say you can always ignore their comments.

I don't know how or if you can tell how many people have selected your story as a favorite.

All that being said, I did read your story. I can't tell if you're looking for feedback or not but I'll give my two cents anyway. I'm not sure if you were trying to write a developed story with a plot and character developement or if you were looking to create more of a stroke type of story. IMHO your story was more of a quickie stroke story. Nothing wrong with that, I'm sure all of us have written one at one time or another. If I'm wrong and you were indeed writing the other type of story my suggestion would be to find an editor. Not to say your writing is bad. I don't think it's bad at all. I'm just an advocate for editors. Additional pairs of eyes can often catch what the author assumes he/she has already explained.

My other suggestion would be to change your POV or to seek help in writing first person POV. There are some on the board who swear by writing in first person and there are others who argue that writing in first person especially for first time writers is extremely difficult. I'm not trying to turn your thread into a fight over which POV is right or wrong, I'm just saying there are instances in your story that conflict. I understand you're telling this story from your point - so please don't take this as a personal attack.

Example:

I could tell her mouth was stretched to the max as she tried to take as much as she could into her warm mouth...

You weren't the one getting sucked so you wouldn't know if her mouth was warm or not unless vapors were coming from her mouth (which could be very interesting).

So, those are my suggestions. It was an interesting read, hope to read more in the future!

Hi,

Welcome to Lit! I have my public comments on. I think most of us do. It may sting a little at first, but getting them kinda desensitizes you to that, and then it's easier to take criticism, at least that's what it did for me. After awhile you started getting great feedback and things get better. After all "The waiting is the hardest part"(tom petty)

Beachlover,

I allow public comments, anonymous comments and encourage both along with votes and feedback here. You have to take the good with the bad. Depending on where you post your stories, you'll get varying degrees of troll feedback along with honest, caring opinions. Most of us look at the troll comments with humor and leave them up if they are public. They usually manage to make themselves look foolish.

As MG said, negative feedback doesn't necessarily mean bad feedback. If all anyone said was that your story was incredibly hot and they got off on it, would you ever manage to improve your writing? On this board, we try to give constructive criticism. By doing this, we help each other improve.

You'll see us argue our points and disagree some, but that's what a discussion is all about.

I haven't read your story yet, but I'll try to get to it later today.

MG, Did you finish writing that Valentine Story yet? Get going girl!!! :D

Yikes! He caught me perusing the forums instead of writing!

<<shuffles off to finish her story before she gets caught slacking again>>

LOL Didn't mean to hijack your thread there beachlover! LOL

If you don't care a bit if you grow and improve as a writer, then, by all means, only look for feedback and comments that say something along the lines of: "OMG ur storie got me so hard! Wanna cyber?" (misspellings intentional)

If, on the other hand, you'd like to improve, then you have to read the comments that aren't all praise and backslaps. There are a lot of veteran authors at Lit, and many of them spend a lot of time reading stories by new authors, and giving them constructive criticism. The fact that we're not perfect can be hard to swallow sometimes, but in the long run, we need to know what works and what doesn't in order to improve.

Grow a thick skin, and turn your public comments on. ;)

Also, is there anyway of knowing how many people have selected the story as a favorite?

Nope, no way to tell that at all unless you have way, way too much time, and are willing to look through every single Lit members favorites list, one by one.

I hate to say it but, she's so right.

As author, you can delete any public comment on your story - you are the moderator. Just don't do it if someone makes a criticism. Comments that are fair to delete are those where other writers or lit members are insulted, some vitriolic or drunken spouting is made or where you are unfairly attacked.

The comment board is quite a good way to publicize yourself.

I haven't gotten any negative public feedback on my Lit stories, since I get very little feedback, PM or public. But I do on another site. I usually use the following guidelines.

warm and fuzzy feedback = keep.

constructive criticism in a warm and fuzzy manner = keep

constructive criticism in a negative but not in an insulting or vitriolic manner = keep

flamey, rude, vitriolic, or simply unhelpful because there's no examples or actual advice = delete.

For example, "This sucks because you let your verb tenses slip and I don't like the word 'slit' for pussy." would be kept.

"You suck." "This bites ass." or "Give it up; too many pixels died for this" all got deleted because there's no constructive criticism in it. It's not helpful to me or to any writers who may be reading my story and comments. I really like when authors leave the constructive criticism so that others can learn too.

I did think the "too many pixels" comment was cute though. :D

The Favorites Portal gives a list of stories that are tops on the Favorites List.

I never got any feedback in the way of a PM.

I don't think I ever received any public feedback that was of much use or benefit, mainly they were little pats on the back. I think that if I ever decide to resume submitting work here, I would do it with the voting, and feedback turned off.

If you want real, and honest feedback on your work, this is the place to get it, or at the Story Discussion Circle

I took a look at your story. Don't use numbers where you can use words.

I started dating my wife twelve years ago. At the time we met she was twenty-fiveand I was twenty-six A few words about Aly, my then girlfriend, she can be shy in a cute way and tends to be more conservative or at least at the time I thought so. Now after knowing her for twelveyears I would say she is very much like the stereotypicalwild librarian behind the glasses and conservative dress. She has a warm, sensuous smile with the most beautiful brown eyes I have ever seen. Her hair is ash blond, she has nice firm 34C breasts with succulent nipples and long toned legs that are to die for. I was immediately attracted to her at first sight. Through the first weeks of our relationship we grew close very quickly and like any new couple the sex was nonstop and hot. This story takes place after two months of us meeting.

Why would I be interested in her bra size? Nothing turns me off more than that. Be creative, describe what they looked like.

In a short story, you have to grab the reader in the first few paragraphs. There's nothing in your first half dozen paragraphs that makes me want to read on.

I just saw an anonymous feedback on a very tame non-con story, saying it was sick and wrong. I wonder how that person ended up reading a non-con story if he/she is repulsed by the subject. It's not like these things aren't labelled.

Although personally, while I don't have any published story yet, I'm looking foward for the angry comments. Those are the most entertaining to read.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. Just because you viewed the story in question as being tame doesn't mean everyone will have the same opinion.

Your coment is sick and wrong. I would never read anything on an erotic site--especially not a comment like this. :D

Hi Lalah :rose:and welcome to The Fragile Egos Club.

You're so right. Why do people click through to the end of a story in a category they don't like just to leave a silly insulting comment. Tell me a thing though, if the flame wars exist in Loving Wives with cuckolds and slut wives, why is the cat of Group Sex such a placid backwater?

Write your story, post it in a category that is not like Baghdad on a bad day and we'll all tell you what we think - and leave PCs.:D:D

It was tame, it barely had any reluctance. I'm not saying it was a bad story, but if you're offended by that story, you won't like any non-con stories. I'm still puzzled how someone so opposed to non-con/reluctance fantasies that he'd be offended by that one ended up there.

One of the amusing things about the Loving Wives thread is that the readers are just as likely to raise Hell with each other as they are to trash you. However, they also are more likely to read your story than others. It's odd. I got a lot of readers but very little response for an anal story. Group Sex and Interracial Love have fewer readers and absolutely no responses at all. But those Loving Wives guys are an odd lot. If you write a cuckold story your character and you get labeled wimps. If the guy's wife cheats and he calls down the wrath of Heaven upon her you get cheers. If you write about a guy and a wife who actually love each other you get criticized for the unliklieness of your plot. You just can't please some people. That's why if the person giving you a hard time is either Anonymous or a reader who has never written anything, I shine him on. IMO, it is better to have a couple of people here that you respect do a "beta read" and pay serious attention to their opinions Mine know who you are and I thank you deeply.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have opened my public comments as on reflection if I am seeking input then I should take the good with the bad. I know not everyone will like the story...I am just excited about it being my first "published" work for other people to hopefully enjoy.

I appreciate everyones feedback. This story was written from an actual experience of mine so maybe it does come across as a stroke story....I cant say it was my intention because I was just trying to retell it. I am working on my second follow-up story so hopefully with the feedback it will be better.

My ultimate goal is to write a book...of which I have the first 100 pages or so completed. So I see this as practice.

Thanks again everyone...........
