What is this new "public comment" option for the stories? I am assuming this is for comments that will be open to all. But comments must be signed (ie, you can't post anonymously).

Anyway, how do people feel about it? How "honest" should such comments be (if something sucks, is it kosher to post a comment to that effect)? I am looking for both authors' and/or readers' perspectives.

I think it’s a great idea, but I haven’t figured it all out yet. I enabled Public Comments on all my stories, and so far I have one comment. The comment didn’t show up with the story though (as far as I can tell). I had to go to my submission page and click on a link to view it, so I don’t know how the comments will be made available.

The fact that the comments are signed should keep the usual spurious “You suck” kind of feedback out, and the one comment I got so far was useful and intelligent (they liked the story, pretty much). It also could encourage comments because the reviewer knows that their comments will stay up and be read. It could give rise to a class of ‘professional’ reviewers. That would be nice.

I think it’s a great idea and long overdue. I’d also like to see a bar-graph type of representation of vote breakdown, which would tell you if you’d been 1-bombed (I’ve seen this on other sites) and a 10-point rating system rather than the very primitive 5-point system, but this is a start.

I agree; better late than never. Besides the reasons above, if a comment or 2 is already there, it/they could inspire more; nothing succeeds like success. It's good for both authors & reviewers who want to protect their e-mail addresses from spammers & stalkers (as is the private feedback form the way it is nowadays). It's good for authors who might not very often check their junk mail, for which their filters might often mistake Lit feedback e-mails. By checking for comments via the story page, authors can see feedback that they might not get otherwise.

BTW, I've turned public comments on for all of my stories & poems. I'm nowhere near the best writer of fiction (erotic or otherwise), but I thought I'd give this new feature a try anyway.

It could be the way my devious mind works, but this may be a possible way of Lit to fade out feedback, both anon and signed, sent via emails, and making it visible to everyone.

Open to all, yes. The comments may be signed but they can also be anonymous. I just tried it on one of my stories and I could make it appear 'from Anonymous from India.'

I would not put a comment about something which sucked. Why do that to anyone? I would send feedback if I had to communicate my dislike to the author. That said, I would not even comment on a public comment board unless I really liked the story and wanted to recommend it to other readers.

A possible improvement would be email notifications when the authors get a public comment. I don't think most check their stories that often and I would want to view my comments and reply to them if possible as soon as they appear.
