Psycho killer raccoons terrorize Olympia

OLYMPIA, Washington - A fierce group of raccoons has killed 10 cats, attacked a small dog and bitten at least one pet owner who had to get rabies shots, residents of Olympia say.

Some have taken to carrying pepper spray to ward off the masked marauders and the woman who was bitten now carries an iron pipe when she goes outside at night.

...

"Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far far better
Run run run run run run run away..."

Any animal that wears a mask to go about its normal activities is, IMNTHO, a risk.

This shot of two more suspects in the psycho raccoon wave of terror. The shot was submitted by intrepid amateur photo-journalist, the late "Smiley" Clickum. The suspect on top reportedly goes by the name of "Bushy" while his co-conspirator is called "Cheney." Both names may, or may not, be an alias.

Yep such cute animals aren't they? And that oh so cute Sheppard mix the oe person bought to protect against the Racoons? Who's going to protect the owner when that doggie gets the taste of blood in it's mouth?

Animals are just that, animals. They will attack and kill when it suits their needs.

Racoons are tough little buggers. They can absorb a lot of punishment and still keep coming at you. (I know this from personal experience.) The only animal under 50 pounds I have dealt with that is worse is the Badger.

Down here we recently had an attack that brought this all to mind. A woman in Coral Springs was raising dogs. She had several Presa Canario's. Several times in the past she had been cited by the police for having dangerous animals but each time had defended them, saying they were just over grown puppies and quite friendly. Well recently she tried to give one of them a bath and was killed by the dog for her efforts. When the police showed up, called by her daughter who saw the attack, they found the dog standing over her body. The misunderstood puppie then turned on the police who shot and killed it.

Any animal can turn, and some are more aggresive than others.

I like raccoons- from a distance. SeaCat is right though, any animal can go dangerously wrong.

I hate to say it, but this sounds a bit like what can happen with packs of wild dogs- they discover that local livestock is easier prey than deer (of which we have plenty) and start taking down farm stock. Around here, if that happens, we get a bunch of local boys to pull out their deer rifles and start patrolling- and everyone gets warned to keep their own pets contained, because it is a shoot on sight affair. If it's a dog, it gets shot.

It sounds like these raccoons are too dangerous to relocate, and should probably be disposed of.

(Random sidenote- I have an armadillo that likes to climb up on my porch and drink from the dog's water dish- I went out to smoke the other night and reached out to scratch the ears of what I thought was my neighbor's cat. Armadillo ears feel cool, and they make this awesome sort of whirring chattering noise!)

We have a 'possum living under our shed, drives the dogs wild, as they can't get under to get him/her. He also drinks from the dogs dish on the deck and every night he comes out to get a drink the dogs race to the kitchen door making a hell of a ruckus.

I hate those overgrown rats... they're nasty, and ugly.

Did the armadillo like it?

Adaptable, too. In my area they live in the sewers coming out at night to climb palm trees and go through the garbage bins.

This is yet another thing folks don't think about when they shut their eyes to both environmentalism and evolution...okay, so you're going to get rid of wetlands and forests and deserts, you need to build new houses and strip malls there. To hell with all those weak species that need those places to survive...

Are you ready for those creatures which are mean and smart enough to survive elsewhere? The ones that, driven out of such places, are going to move into your towns and adapt to the new enviornment?

I have no idea. It froze, and then took off once I moved my hand (because they so don't feel like cats!). But it's still coming around, and it doesn't seem afraid of me.

Oddly enough, my big-arse dog, who kills rabbits all the time (completely by accident, she jumps on them, trying to play, and breaks them, and then she carries them home like kittens and tries to get me to fix them) doesn't make any effort to bother the cats or the armadillo.

Cats scratch and armadillos rollup in a ball and just lay there. :)

Armadillos are also the only warm blooded animal other than man known to carry the Bacteria for Hansons Disease.

LOL

On Cape Cod they are having a problem with Coyotes.

Ten years ago they weren't known to be on Cape. Now they are over running the Cape. They are not only killing and eating pets, they have been known to attack people.

These are not the Coyotes you see in the Mid-West. These are cross bred with Wolves. They are larger and nastier than your home grown Coyotes. They are also much more aggresive.

People want them gone but the Tree Huggers are fighting them tooth and nail. They claim they are Native to Cape Cod. (Hint, they haven't been seen there for well over 100 years.)

Now they have found another animal called a Fisher. This is an animal related to not only the Weasel but also the Wolverine. It has never been known to exist on Cape Cod. Yet the Tree Huggers say that this animal, which has been known to attack not only pets but people, is now native to the Cape and should not be hunted.

Let's all give into the Tree Huggers and go the way of the Dodoe. Let the critters take over.

Be fair, Cat. If they'd listened to the tree-huggers they wouldn't have the coyote or other critter problem because the critters would be living in the woods that were cut down and eating each other rather than people.

And maybe the tree huggers are right. Everytime man kills off critters, newer and meaner critters seem to take their place.....
