Charles Marie Widor wrote this tocatta to his 5th Symphony, but his performance of it is bland and uninspired. Checkout what others do with the same score....

Bringing it to writing, the author of a book quite often is not the best reader of that book at a book reading.
 
I agree with JBJ's assessment though note that Widor's recording was made in 1932 when he was 88. I think he was probably more than a little past his best as a performer.

Following sr71plt's comment I would also add that many writers also tend to make the worst editors of their own work.

Not true for Artur Rubenstein and Horowitz.
