No, this isn't a thread about having an anal fixation, because I don't.

It's a little story about a casual aquantance of mine who, after a few beers and a topic change to sex (isn't that were drunken convos always end up? Funny how that works) and how she said I was promiscuous.

I really don't care what she thinks...I'm comfortable with my behavior, and that's all that matters as long as I'm not hurting anyone else, but I was just wondering how different people define promiscuous.

I "lost it" at 16, I am now 23, and I have been with 9 people. I don't consider that "slutty", but apparently some people do.

How do you define promiscuity? How many people total, or how many people in, say, a year?

I think the official minimum number of partners to be considered promiscuous, as defined by the US Centers for Disease Control is:

"however many people you have shagged plus one".

If it's not, I swear I won't rest until this becomes the accepted standard!

By averaging ..you would only have been with a little over 1 person a year. I would definately say you were not in the "slutty" category

While we are on this topic...why is it that if you are a female you are considered "slutty"? If you were a guy with the same number of lovers you are considered a real man...virile..a stud...lucky ( did you notice these adjectives are always good ones !)
I personally think that is very unfair...what is good for the goose should definately be just as good for the gander.

Lisa, my point exactly, and that's what I told her...my escapades are few and far between, both by choice and by circumstance...more by choice though. I just don't get attracted to men easily...

I think promiscuity is something different for everyone...we all have different standards...I'm so glad my "friend" decided to set me straight though.

Funny! Just a couple of weeks ago my best friend and I had the same conversation... we ended up in a fight, though, because she went on her thing about how she's only been with one guy... etc. etc.

Anyway, WhatEVER--- to both our friends!

And, in answer to your question, I don't think there is a number that defines a promiscuous person. I think there's a difference between going out and having fun once in awhile, and sleeping around because you have no self respect...

To me that's what promiscuity entails: having no respect for your body and letting others take advantage. As long as you know *why* you're there (i.e. knowing that you're not there for emotional support), and you understand the consequences of your actions, whatever those consequences may be, you're just a sexually confident woman. Nothing more.

I would think that's about average, and as long as you feel okay with it, that's all that matters.

I was a really promiscuous teenager (a hell of a lot more than 9 if it makes you feel better), but even then, I didn't really feel bad about it until I realized I had a "reputation" at school.

That made me take a closer look at myself and why I was doing it, but I still didn't really stop until I met the man who would be my husband (and I slept with him on the first night, too). Of course, back then we didn't have to worry about AIDS, and I don't think there was as much of a stigma as there is now.

But, having said all that, if I could live my life over again, I don't think I'd give away my body so easily. Some of us just have to learn things the hard way. C'est la vie!

I wish people would quit whining about gender inequality. It's a never-ending argument so nobody wins.

I agree with Jeff. The double-standard thing is moot. No sense in complaining about it because I don't think it will ever completely disappear.

As far as promiscuity is concerned, that is useless to debate also. It's like beauty. Everyone has a different opinion about what constitutes physical beauty and there is no concrete way to define it. And in a moral area, like promiscuity, you have to take in all kinds of contributing factors, such as religious upbringing, sexual abuse, etc.
The bottom line is whether you feel promiscuous or not.

However, there aren't going to be many who are callous enough to say, "Yeah, I think you've been a bit slutty." So, most of your responses here are going to be the validating type.
