Now I see this as good news also. I have know idea what the homophobes out there are afraid of. It's not contagious. It's not like that crotch rot you get from sittin' in a wet foxhole too long. It's not like that fungus that gets under you toenails and turns the yellow and ripply.

I dont know what the big deal with gay troops is really, other than having to shower communally. And hell when we were in Kirkuk in 03 we showered with the women, we didnt give a damn about getting a free show, we only wanted to wash off 2 months of dirt and sweat.

All I've heard are the general talking points too. Breaks up unit cohesion and such talk. They never say HOW it hurts unit cohesion. Just scramble down the list of talking points. So can someone explain HOW it hurts the military?

Unit cohesion is a funny thing. Even without any sexual overlay, a fire team in combat or one of the Special Operations teams is as tight a human organization as you can have without mind meld. Any marriage that is as bonded as they get is beyond most of us. I mean, marriages have broken up because the guy is more wedded to his mates than he is to his wife! So, could the reverse occur because the same-sex partner isn't in the team? And if he/she was, would they be less bonded to the others than they are to each other? I'd imagine it a rare thing but not having ever been in Combat Arms, I really can't comment.
Now forty years ago, we recoiled at any same-sex contact between guys in the company. We didn't report it but we definitely withdrew from the guys we discovered. Now it appears that the young soldiers are much more accepting. It's the old guard that is still resisting. The COS recognizes this. Even Powell admits he now thinks the don't-tell rule can go. It's the congress-bodies who are the real obstacle--as usual.
