I have an idea for a story I'd like to publish featuring a married college professor (black female, age: mid 30s) and a college senior (white male, age: early 20s). I have decided on the characters names and the title.
However, I'm unsure whether this could work as a series (although if it is well received I would definitely continue). This would be my first story, so I'd appreciate any pointers/ideas.
Themes: Interracial, older/younger, extramarital affair

Age gap is my wheelhouse. And a lovely older black woman is definitely an interest. This would fit into the interracial, mature and loving wives categories. The driving factor for them would be whether you are going to fetishize or emphasize a particular dynamic. Is the main focus going to be on the fact that he is white and she is black? Is it going to be their age difference or the fact that they are sneaking around to have this affair.

If you're tempted to say all three, I would advise against it. Pick one and stick to it, maybe just touch on the other two a little. It's my opinion that readers frequent a particular category for a reason. There is some interest that draws them. And they don't really need the waters muddied with competing focuses.

As for the series idea. As a first work, make it a stand alone story, in my opinion. There is a special feeling to finishing a story and knowing it's done. Beginning, middle, end. The readers get an ending and closure. That's not to say that you can't revisit the characters later on, and if there is more to their story, you should.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want to chat about it as you go. Good luck.

Thanks. I'll do that.

I agree with Rob: write the story as a standalone. Make it as good as it can possibly be in that context. If you feel like it later, you can always add more stories for the same characters. But the first one has to stand on its own or it will not attract any attention.
