Like old times, tradition still held steady.

Even in modern times, Princess Cassidy Vandenhayden was expected to produce an heir. Although the gender wasn't as important as it was in the past, everyone was hoping for a boy...

But even after a year of marriage, there still was no child to speak of.

And the press was having a field day with it.

The spokesperson for husband and wife had informed the press that the couple wanted to concentrate on being husband and wife first, before children were to come into the picture....

If only that were true... Cassidy often thought.
************

With in the next few weeks, Cassidy would be traveling to war torn parts of the world. It was something she had wanted to do and of course, her new husband protested, as well as the royal government. They were adamant about her not traveling into such dangerous territory, but she, as usual, got her way.

Finally, there was a truce called between the royal advisers and of course, Cassidy.

She would be taking her husband's best friend, who just happened to be head of security for the royal family.

“You must keep her safe”

Traynor rose an eyebrow watching his best friend as he pulled on his black suit jacket. He ignored him (some thing not many would do) and instead grabbed his nine millimeter checking it before sliding it into the holster hidden underneath his armpit.

“I am the head of security” He finally reminded his best friend and king “A position you put me in need I remind you….. If you think I need to be reminded of my job then perhaps you don’t think I can really do it”

“Oh hush” The king said rolling his eyes “you know what I mean the places you are going into are dangerous I don’t think she-“

“Understands?” Tray asked raising an eyebrow “I have spoken to her about the risks several times over she understands she just thinks this is important she is a strong woman my friend not some one who is going to just bow down to you”

“I know that” He said sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose “but still I worry about her and you!”

“Relax” Tray said rolling his eyes and running a hand through his short black hair “I am taking her to places we have already secured we wont be any where near the actual fighting” he said patting his friends shoulders before turning on his heel. He grabbed his duffel bag and swung it over his shoulder easily shouldering it no his muscular back as he walked to the convoy waiting for him.

He tossed his bag over to some of the attendants and stopped conversing with the attached royal guards. He double-checked the itinerary and made sure it was right before finally stepping into the limo situated in the middle of the convoy.

“Good morning princess” He said tipping his head slightly as he settled in “Are you prepared for the journey?”

The morning's goodbyes were..tough. Why, Cassidy didn't know.

The last of her clothing had been packed. As well as other necessities. Last minute security details were being taken care of by the head of security. So, all in all there was nothing to worry about. But for some reason, there was tension in the air.

Cassidy knew what it was. It was the fact that she and James had argued. Although they weren't the type to yell and scream while arguing, it was a lot of talking until the wee hours of the morning when a truce was called. They didn't want to fight before she was to leave for the next few weeks while he was taking care of matters here at home.

In the limo, Cassidy was miles away and didn't hear the door open to the limo as Traynor entered. She looked over at her husband's best friend and head of security. He was also best man at their wedding due to the fact that James had no other brothers or sisters, so it was acceptable.

"I am ready as I'll ever be." She said, giving him a faint smile before looking back out the other window in the car. Cassidy didn't bother to ask about security. She trusted him. He was a perfectionist when it came to the royal family's security.

"I appreciate you escorting me, Traynor, I know you would probably prefer to remain here with James." Her arms rested in her lap as she looked back at him and watched him.

“Not necessarily princess “ Traynor replied tipping his head slightly “A vacation will do me some good and I prefer your company much more than my stuffy best friend” He joked his green eyes alight with humor as the limo pulled out and they started down the road.

“The trip will do us both some good I imagine I have been eager to see how our soldiers are doing on the battle field” He told her nodding outside as they left the palace “I am not cut out for all this opulence and royal life and am looking forward to seeing my fellow residents and soldiers fighting the good fight”

“What about you? Any big grand aspirations? Besides providing morale for the troops?”

She shrugged and continued to look out the darken windows of the limo. "I find that if I don't plan then things go better where as I plan, then I would be setting myself up for disappointment... If that makes any sense at all" she finished with a smile as she turned to look at him.

"I will say it'll probably be over in no time and before you know it, we'll be back home."

“I am sure we can make it as long as possible” He remarked back favoring her with a rare smile as they continued on their journey “After all if it’s a royal order” he told her inclining his head and winking. He reached over taking her hand and giving it a gentle squeeze before leaning back.

If it had been anyone else touching her, it would not be accepted, but Tray was as much family as those related by blood. He had kept the family safe for so long that he wasn't considered an employee, at least not by the King and Cassidy's standard. There was no one else they trusted more.

They finally made it the airport and soon, they were on their way. Cassidy looked over some paperwork and a few last minute details. They would first spend the night at a hotel and from there, move on with the purpose of the trip.

It would be two weeks on the road, after that, they would meet with James in Hong Kong, where a state dinner was to be held in their honor.

No, royal duties never ended.

After a while, Cassidy leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. They were alone in the private plane so no one would disturb her. She just needed to sleep for a few minutes...

He kept by her the entire time

Not really saying much but being a constant source of companionship and safety. The trip leading up to the plane was uneventful but nevertheless Troy made certain of it coordinating with his security tam and every one involved. He kept a vigilant eye out watching and making sure the woman he loved was safe.

Yes he loved

Now staring at her as she slept he couldn’t stop the rush of emotions from bubbling to the surface. He didn’t know when it began but he knew now more than ever he was in to deep had fallen to hard for the woman he was charged with protecting.

But then why wouldn’t he fall for her?

Beautiful strong willed and level headed she was every thing he could have wanted in a woman and needed. She took to being a Queen with a tenacity not found in her husband which made her all the more attractive in his eyes. His friend card about the country sure but he didn’t rally get the people.

Not like she did

He reached out one hand gently stroking her cheek before his hand snapped back and he continued to stare at her. He couldn’t her husband was a jealous man who wouldn’t take to any one touching her much less his best friend. He sighed leaning back scowling as he watched her sleep obsessed with some thing that was forbidden to him.

Even though her slumber was brief, Cassidy dreamt. She dreamt of the time James would hold her and seduce her. The way he touched her cheek when they would talk when they were alone...

Those days seemed to have passed as soon as they were married. Now, it was all business.

Cassidy tried to put a smile on her face and not think about it, but it was hard. She had found herself talking more and more with Tray. Not just the regular talks but more personal topics. It wasn't proper, but Cassidy didn't care, she needed to talk and Tray was there...always willing to listen.

Unlike the King.

Waking suddenly at the sound of a clicking, she saw Tray cocking the gun he always kept on his person. She sat up and quickly focused before clearing her throat. "Is there anything wrong?" She asked as she noticed they had landed and the plane was about to taxi.

“I am not certain” Troy murmured watching as the plane began its descent. On the outside every thing looked fine h tower cleared them the plan was taxing and they would be touching down any minute.

But

His sixth sense was nagging him itching at the back of his head. He couldn’t point his finger and say why but there was some thing wrong that much he was certain of. His eyes scanned the runway again keeping one hand on his gun as the plan began to descend.

“Just stay by me” He said getting up after the plane landed and reaching out with his hand. He helped her up and turned nodding at the two other security men he had on the plane as well gesturing for them to go out and make sure the coast was clear.

Cassidy thought nothing of it. If it was anything, Tray had it under control. Instead she grabbed her small carry on bag and made sure her hair and clothes were presentable.

The itinerary called for her to meet a few people after getting off the plane and then after that, a car would take her to the hotel where she would be staying for the night and then after that, she would be on her way with her mission.

The door opened and she stepped out and let her eyes adjust to the sudden brightness of the light and she smiled at the top of the steps and waved before heading down the steps onto the pavement. She greeted those there, shook hands and accepted some flowers before talking a little bit to those surrounding her. She noticed Tray was ever watchful. He was stressed.

There was still some thing wrong

He watched her interact with the noble keeping his fun hidden as he kept looking around. She was in danger he just didn’t know from what yet. The locals perhaps? No they loved the King and Queen. Radicals or the terrorist? Perhaps but if thy were they were hiding and ready. He made a snap decision and brought out his cell phone texting a priority number a code and waiting for the confirmation. Once he got it he stepped forward going to the Queens ear.

“We will be moving hotels”

He nodded at some of the others and moved taking her and escorting her to the bulletproof limo. He let her in and checked it for bombs before he finally climbed in with her.

“Some thing is wrong I am not sure what yet” He said softly “we will be moving hotels just to be safe”

Cassidy didn't worry about the change in hotels. That's why he was there. To do the worrying for her and the family.

They rode to the new hotel in silence. Well, more of Cassidy being silent while Tray was communicating with his men. She let him take care of things as she admired her flowers..

It was then she noticed something small hidden in the leaves and petals. A light was flashing with in and Cassidy could only give a puzzled look at it..

“What?” He said leaning over

That’s when he saw it

Time ground to a standstill, he was moving on auto pilot grabbing the flowers and carefully lifting them.

“We got a bomb!”

He pushed himself out of the door not caring that they were still moving pretty fast. He let himself hit the ground cradling his body to lesson the blow as he threw the flowers way. It exploded seconds later creating a shockwave that rattled him to his bone.

All Cassidy could do was scream and she called out Tray's name when another guard grabbed her by the arm to prevent her from falling out after him.

"Turn around!" She yelled at the driver, who was already doing just that.

Once they got to where Tray landed, Cassidy jumped out and ran to him, "Oh my God, are you OK?"

She found herself kneeling by him and looking him over while her hands over him.

“I’m fine” He hissed as the ambulance and police began to gather “take her to the hotel” He hissed to the driver who nodded and pulled her away.

FIVE MINUTES LATER

He was in the ambulance texting Cassidy that he was going to the hospital before closing his eyes. He felt himself beginning to drift and let it happen dreaming of an entirely different life with a certain girl.

He awoke a few hours later in the hospital the steady beep of the EKG keeping him company. He got up adjusting his pillows reaching for his phone to check on Cassidy.
