Just heard on the news that the kiss between two men on the long running soap opera, As the World Turns, has upset the main sponsor, Proctor and Gamble. Apparently P&G thinks it is unhealthy to promote the gay lifestyle.

Too bad they own half the products on the shelves, makes it tough to boycott.

figures P&G straight out of ohio would feel that way. You know what if a big company like them would just come out in support of glbt issues the point would be mute and maybe even get some more support because noone is going to boycott everything they make hell people use stuff by them all the time they don't even know is P&G.

argh!

For a company like P&G it all comes down to the bottom line. Which will they get more of from the consumers out there. Will the homophobes rally the troops and start a letter-writing and boycott campaign to get the couple to a "Scared Straight" camp or will the fans of "Nuke" Noah and Luke be sending more bags of kisses to the shows producers to keep the relationship moving along and progressing?

You can bet that P&G knows the profit line created by such shows as Queer as Folk and The L Word and they'll be watching their own profits very closely on this one as well as any other products they back.

From what i can find in the news right now, they have decided to let the relationship continue at a much slower pace than that of the hetero couples in the soaps... the controversy could well fill their pockets and they'll follow the green trail wherever that leads them.

I must say it is refreshing to see SO many more gay characters on the tube. We are seemingly everywhere! :D

I will (and hope many of you will) write a letter to P&G expressing my disappointment their intolerant view.

Ummm, pick up one of their products in the store and look. They have an 800 number and an address listed for complaints, thoughts so on so forth. ;)

Now not to say ya'll are wrong, but perhaps they are making the statement for two reasons, to cover their own butts, and to get more people aware of this gay kiss. I don't watch soaps personally so I had no idea there was a gay relationship on a soap.

I'm sure everyone has heard there is no such thing as bad publicity. Well in this case that isn't exactly right. It's possible to boycott Proctor and Gamble, the generic stuff anymore is made by a different company so you can get all of the amenities without going to a specific company, though in some cases that's a bit hard.

So they protect themselves from backlash by saying they aren't happy with the kiss, but they will continue to support the show. That way, they can make their cake and eat it to, the anti gay freakshows are happy because they said they don't like that, and the rest are happy because they are keeping the show going and there's still a gay couple.

Something of a silent support, companies and countries do it all the time.

I have been lead to believe that gay couples (male or female) actually BOOST ratings.
Of course, they may not be concerned with ratings if some "I never watch soaps but I'll be damned if I'll let them show those filthy faggots" group goes all boycotty
