Problems with the Wii?

No I've had mine since shortly afte they came out and it's worked perfect. Iknow alot of people that have them and never heard of an issue.

Would it be possible to test the device with a different disk? Often it's the simplest answer when a problem confronts us, and that also means the least expensive. Should be much easier to get the installation or game disk replaced than the entire system.

I can't comment on the Wii but Microsoft has the same problem last year with the XBox 360. They used cheap wiring for the DVD player and when the thing heated up too much it would melt the sauder(sp?) that held the wires in place. They ended up spending a shit ton of money fixing these things because the problem turned into an epidemic as systems across the world crapped out.

Being an avid gamer I keep up with news that comes out of the industry and this is the first I've heard of this problem with the Wii. However, I did a quick look and apparently it's happened to a number of people. I don't think it's as wide spread as the XBox fiasco but you're not alone with this problem.

I'm sorry to hear about it. It's always frustrating and I can sympathize since my XBox just went out on me yesterday, giving me the same issue it did last year. Now I'm going to have to contact Microsoft and send it off again. Hopefully you can get it back in time for Christmas.

I worked part time at a video game retailer last year and sold a shitloads of Wiis, when we could get them in. I heard of that problem, but production has been working overtime for the past year and a couple of faulty ones most likely slipped thru the cracks. I only have the 360, but when that went down to overheating, I was able to ship it back to Microsoft at their cost. Got it back in less than a month. I heard that Nintendo's turnaround is faster because they don't have as many buggy systems. Good luck to you getting it under the tree in time.

Bah- sorry to hear that, you'd think the store would give you another one off the shelf and sort it out themselves, the consumers guarantees act here in NZ is great at looking after the customer, you have the right to demand the result you want........... might not be the same in the states though =(

Keep us up to date - hubby and I also scrimped and saved and bought ourselves one for xmas, but we're not opening it till then - perhaps we ought to check it just to make sure.

Only problem we've had is the little sensor bar doohickey getting bumped & throwing off the calibration. We've since used the sticky provided to glue it to the top of the TV.

Oh, and we burned through rechargeable battery pack.

Good luck on the fix! I would definitely explain that it's a Christmas gift. Might light a fire under them... maybe.

:rose:

We've been lucky, I suppose: no problems with either the Wii or the XBOX 360 (and we've had it for a year).

The kids have had no problem with the Wii... so I think that you just got hit with an unfortunate happenstance.... Sorry, doll :(

Much of the reason that Wii's are not being exchanged here is that there are none to exchange FOR. Only in the last couple of weeks have I seen Wii units hanging around for longer than a few minutes in a store. The demand has been that high.

You made a good choice though, Sarahh... while the unit is not top of line as far as power or game availability, the unique interactiveness of the controller makes it a very different game system.

I think the Wii rocks. And I'm more of a PS guy.

It's the new board game, really, isn't it? Something that encourages family interaction instead of solitary gaming

There was a problem with some of the Wii consoles that the reader was smudged or outdated in that it wouldn't read the Wii's dual-layered discs. Literally, these discs have two layers of data instead of one, and are tricky to read.

You might have been putting it in wrong. When I got mine back after sending it for repairs, I accidentally stuck in the disc facing the wrong side for a long time. >>;

Yes, it absolutely is. The first thing the kids wanted to do after I got it set up was bowl against their parents. :D

I rock at Wii baseball. :D

My boy plays that a lot... he mostly plays Super Mario Galaxy though. His sister and I play tennis.

I got him Tiger Woods for his birthday. If they tweaked it right that should be fun.

I need to Wii more.

I'm hearing that Wii Fit will be "the" hard-to-find gift this year. Can't decide if I want it, though. I do my best workouts on my own system.

I really need to get myself a Wii as soon as I can afford it. I think that's where my Christmas money's going to go.

We scrimped, saved, planned, and then snagged one a couple of weeks ago.

They are tough to find, as the electronics places in town only get a few in every couple of weeks. Anyway.

We set it up, attempted to get things working, and we got an error message.

"Cannot Read Disk"

Okay, fine. So can we take it back to the store? No! We have to fucking mail it back to Nintendo for them to fix.

Yes, it's under warranty, yes it is all free. But this is a serious Christmas present we're working on, and we didn't expect the damn thing wouldn't work right out of the fucking box, you know?

Grump.

Anyone else have problems with their system? We're new to the Wii.

That happened to us with one of the games we bought...but it wasn't the system it was the actual game that was pooched.

What I don't understand is why the store that you purchased the Wii from wouldn't just replace the darn thing. What ever happened to customer service??? That doesn't seem right to me.

As I said earlier, they simply don't have them. In most, if not all, of the US, Wii units sell out within hours if not minutes.
